Oil filters

I just encountered the same problem buying a filter for my 01 Sport. Every brand had two different sized filters listed. Even looking at the filter that was on it... it looked like it was 1/2 way in between the two in length.
I just bought both of them, I'll return the one that doesn't fit.
Could be Autozone has things screwed up. That would be shocking.

Don't worry, as mentioned evidently around 2001 or 2002 Ford changed the block oil filter adapter. That determines which filter goes on it. The 95-01 302's all have an adapter that takes the FL820S filter.

My '01 Sport uses the 820s.

The books at every store I've checked show either filter could be available for this engine. You must check the vehicle for the correct size.

Interesting, but Ford does that a lot.

And they don't keep very good record of their little changes, especially mid-year changes, unfortunately. You have to really dig for some info.

Yes, the books and manuals are often incorrect. You need to use more common sense than religious belief in the intelligence of a book or manual. That's my pet peeve, excuse me for that.

The filters are easy to tell apart, the only two that Explorers can have. The FL1A is much larger than the FL820S, one is almost twice as long as the other. A quick look at the old one can easily tell them apart. Regards,

Actually the Motorcraft filter that was on it when I bought the truck was 1/2 inch or so longer than the Bosch one I just put on. (Mine turned out to be the shorter of the two filters.) Hence the trouble in simply matching the filter up to the length of the old one.

When I ordered my TMH, Bob send me a filter from WIX that was larger then the 820, but fit. Does anyone know what the WIX number is?

My 85 302 took an FL1A. Seems they are always switching back and forth. The 820S has a special drainback valve I think.

We are referring to the Explorer engines, most other 302's take the old standard FL1A.

Had a similar issue, and bought the wrong filter for my truck so I thought I'd add my data to the list.

2000 XLT, 4.0 SOHC, = FL1A (Fram PH8A). Standard thread size.

My Owners Manual shows the FL-1A (Capacities & Specifications, page 185). The Motorcraft / Ford Parts website shows the FL-820-S. I've always used the K&N Filters HP-2010.

The K&N HP-2010 crosses to the fl-820s (metric thread)

The K&N HP-3001 crosses to the fl-1a (sae thread).

That means in this case, your owners manual is wrong....

Ok my research has found that sometime in 2001 on the 4.0 SOHC the filters were changed on the Explorers.

They go by engine codes to find this out:

X engine code is the metric

E engine code is the standard

The engine code is the 8th digit on your vin#

Hope that helps
