Fisrt I want to say thanks to everyone that responded to my first post about the mysterious electrical /transmission symptoms. The electrical symptons are still a mystery but I think we have found the end of the probelm with the tranny , now I need to track it to the possible core in order to find a solution for my disabled mother....

so after some long distance investigation (1600) miles . I find that my mothers 96 ford explorer has oil in the transmission , the tranny just stoped pulling one day soon after replacing the fule pump and alternator, come to find out that the man who did this work also changed the oil , so I am now trying to find out
if there are any possible mechanical failures that would cause oil to turn up in the transmission but nowhere else or is this a case of human error , if this could have been cuased by a mechanical failure of some kind, what whould that be and how would one remedy the situation quickley and inespensively ??

thanks in advance for any input :

Sorry to hear the electrical problem is a mystery but the oil in the transmission seems almost impossible other than human error. What leads you to believe that its oil that is inside the transmission and not HEAVILY used transmission fluid?

1ajermeyd: we suspect fowl play here because ths is a case of women wants to leave man , man wants vehicle for himself,
he was asked to change the trannsmission fluid pending a long trip after split up ,, immmediately after this is when the problems started......
when checked the tranny fluid is silky black and about two quarts over full , whereas the engine oil is about two quarts low....
1+1=2 right ?
can this be fixed by pulling and draining the tranny and torque converter alone ??

thanks

Eh, your best bet is going to be to flush it, as theres still alot in the tranny even after the pan is dropped.

i would flush it and also change the transmission filter with involves dropping the pan just to make sure. it's inexpensive to replace the filter and pan gasket

thanks for responding everyone ;
I am told that the torque converter wil also have to be pulled in order to drain completely: is there anything else that should be done while the tranny is out besides the gasket ,just for good measures ? try to flush the tranny lines perhaps ?

thanks again for the input :::

pull the torque converter?, You would have to remove the transmission to do that. Search transmission flush in the tranny section, basically you unhook a cooler line and stick it in a 5 gallon pail, start engine in park, it will start pumping the fluid out into the bucket and you add fluid via dipstick tube at a similar rate until you flush all the old out and only nice bright red fluid is coming out. Shut it down and hook it all back up, install new filter, start engine and top up to proper level. That's a flush. If that's too much for your skill level go to a transmission shop and tell them what you believe happened and they should be able to handle it.

The only way engine oil could get in the transmission is if someone put it there.

First, flush trans, then drop pan, change filter and replace 5 more quarts of fluid. I would not run the black stuff thru a new filter, so do the filter last.

There is a lot more than 2qts of fluid in the transmission. Moreover, unless heavily used, engine oil is amber or light brown, not 'silky black'. Does the fluid smell burned? If so, this story sounds like a burned transmission. Perhaps someone attempted to 'limp home' after finding that out and added a couple quarts of transmission fluid? If the clutches are burned, there will be plenty of evidence in the pan.
