Oil Question

Upon replacing my valve cover gaskets for my 91 Eddie Bauer i noticed a fair amount of oil pooling up in the back of the intake

Is this normal? Should I invest in an oil catch can? It's enough oil to make black marks in the snow when warming up the car.

Running that much oil thru it can't be that great for it can it?

Sorry for so many questions, still learning my car.

The engine and transmission were rebuilt a couple years ago and it is running really normally aside from the oil issue.

A catch can is a good investment. It will keep the oil from depositing on the valves and piston tops and will prevent detonation.

This might explain why my Viper autostart has been having such a hard time lately. Takes about 5-6 tries to start the car now. Installing new sparkplugs, water pump, valve cover gaskets, hoses, thermostat gasket, pulleys, and a new complete clutch fan unit.

The valve cover gaskets have been leaking for a long time and costing me a small fortune. The old plugs did not look very good. The old gaskets were hard as a rock and were not even bonded to the head.

Some oil accumulation in the upper intake is normal. The crankcase vent hose that connects to the cold air intake is the reason it should be getting in there. Good post on it here:

Some oil accumulation in the upper intake is normal. The crankcase vent hose that connects to the cold air intake is the reason it should be getting in there. Good post on it here:

After inspecting the sparkplugs, its obvious that the back two cylinders were burning a majority of that oil. Makes sense since the engine has a slight tilt to it in that direction.

My brother mentioned that if i do install a Oil Catch Can it would freeze up during the winter

Is there a way to get it to quit sucking up so much oil?

Oil doesn’t freeze.

-22f is a ridiculous number. It’s far too specific. Oil is nothing like water. It obviously doesn’t have a specific freezing point. 5w30 usually has a working temp of -30.

Also, if your oil is freezing in your catch can, you’ve got bigger problems because it’ll be frozen in the crank.

Where did you get this? It's not true. Like Brooks said, 5w-30 has a working temperature of -30F. Oil never actually freezes due to ambient temps. Even if it did in a catch can, when you ran the engine for a minute or two, it would thaw out. However, you would have bigger problems because if it freezes in a catch can, the engine block, transmission, transfer case, and both differentials will also be frozen.

My bad. For whatever reason I was under the impression that the oil labels were stated in Celsius. Very few people have to worry about oil freezing, and if you lived in an area where it was a concern, you would definately know it.

There’s little difference. -22f is -30c.

Oil technically never freezes.

I think it´s not normal. Shouldn´t leak oil anywhere.
