Hey guys! I have had my 02 Explorer EB for over two years now. Last weekend, i noticed that on the roof of the car that paint is flaking off in about 1/2 inch chunks. The paint is cracked around the sunroof and on the grooves of the roof rack. Is this a common problem? I have also noticed what looks like tiny cracks on my hood. Does ford have any kind of paint warranty?

That would be part of the bumper to bumper warrenty if your X still has it.

It's called "checking" and is usually caused by improper paint application. There is no way to fix it. Only sanding down to bare metal and repainting.

sounds like it was either repainted, and not done correctly, OR it's never had a coat of wax on it since the day it was new...i'd guess more that it's been repainted..

that used to be a big problem with ford. if it was black, blue, grey or certain reds were bad for that. you had to strip it down to bare metal, and start from scratch

You didn't say was under the flaking paint.

If it was still paint under it, someone repainted your X and never did any prep work on the roof. This requires more time to get down in the rain channels and someone skipped that step.

If its primer then it was probably a factory job thats flaking.
Being an 02 I doubt there is any paint warranty left on it.

Has the same problem on my 04 with white paint. Dealer would not help since out of warranty, pretty unbelievable for a 3 year old vehicle. Vehicle was never repainted.

The body shop told me the paint was applied too thin. They sanded and repainted and applied a clear coat finish to the entire roof to hopefully prevent future problems, total cost was about $500. So far so good but it is really unacceptable.

My 05 seems to be doing the same thing. Of course it has 38,000 miles so it's probably out of warranty. But I'm going to call the dealer and find out. Pretty damn pathetic, of all the vehicles I have owned this has never happened. Probably won't buy another Ford.

well

Ford knows they've screwed up. My 05 that I keep pin clean is starting to check. I found a TSB : http://www.autosafety.org/article.php?scid=119&did=1241

That article covers a LOT of Ford products, and it says that iron contamination in aluminum panels is causing rust.

Researching this for a day now, it is *very* common with several product lines. Fords' help appears to be variable, leaning to none at all. Their last class action suit for a paint problem was in the late 90's. I am going to start researching there.

ps - they aren't covering it under any warranty work that I have found yet. They are kicking in a few hundred dollars towards a new job. Nice, huh?

04 Explorer Limited

Hey Guys,
I have a 04 Explorer Limited with the same problem. Maybe we can all pool together and confront this issue with Ford. I plan to call customer service on 3/17/08, this is no coincidense.

I just got the " Too bad, your 2 weeks out of warranty" story this morning.
We can fix it for $300 bucks!
What B.S.
The white paint is flaking off the roof in the rain channels.
This has happened on both the '93 and the '05 exploders I have owned.
There will not be a third.:thumbdwn:

My dad had a similar issue on one of his red Aerostars. He was 5 weeks out of warranty and they would not repaint. His position (once home, of course :D) was that the warranty has to end at some point, and he was ok fixing it, because they "can't cover everything forever, and rules are rules I guess." 2 days, 2 weeks, or 2 months, sometime the warranty has to end.

But if you're under warranty, for sure- get it fixed.

I think between the two of us, we've bought about 8 Ford vehicles since then, because the vehicles are too reliable to pass up, at least for us. (Aside from those damn Camry's they keep buying, but that ends after this one- they HATE their '08)

It sounds like this is a factory paint issue, but I will say that I've seen many SUVs of various brand with roof paint issues, even moss growing on them. In our wet climate people who get lazy about waxing the roof since it takes a ladder or stool will pay for it eventually. Heck, I have to use a toothbrush to get the green off of the bottom of the windows on my '07 about every 3rd wash.

Paint Bubbling

Hey Guys,
Good News! I Called Ford Motor Co. Customer Service First. My Concern Was Documented; I Went To My Selling Dealer And They Are Going To Honor The Warranty. The Technical Service Bulletin Link In One Of The Post In This Forum Was Of Great Help. More Specifically It Stated The Fix For Both Perforated And Non-perforated Bubbling/peeling. I Mentioned The Bulletin To The Service Mgr.. As Long As Your Vehicles Are Not More That 5yrs Old Ford Should Honor The Repair. The Corrosion Warranty States Preforation, The Bulletin Which Was Fords Fix For The Problem Included Non Preforated Bubbling. You May Need To Start Making Some Phone Calls, Starting With Ford Motor Customer Service. Good Luck To All!

My problem was a duplicate to this. White paint flaking off in the rain channels. I had the channels repainted and the entire roof clearcoated. Holding up well ever since.
