I need some advice from you guys, I have a uk explorer 1997 4.0l sohc with a useless park brake, I have searched the forums but not turned up any answers, my truck has a hand lever here in the uk not a foot pedal, so my questions are as follows,

1) are the rear and intermediate cables the same on uk and us models

2) does anyone know what cable I need for the front ( I assume this is not the same as the us front as it would be shorter as not operated by a pedal)

Any info would be appreciated as I'm stuck because truck won't pass its mot without the park brake working, have tried to get parts in the uk but no one carries parts anymore !

if the hand brake used in UK trucks is similar to the foot operated parking brake used on US trucks, there's one long cable that runs from the pedal, along the left frame rail to the passenger side and a short cable that hooks into it and goes to the driver side (reverse sides for right hand drive). the short cable seems to break more often than the long one. assuming the UK trucks use the same brake shoes inside the rear disk rotor hat setup, it is also common for these small shoes to lose their linings and for the moving parts to rust and no longer operate as intended.

if your parking brake cable is between the front seats, you may have a completely different cable setup than on US trucks. i don't know if this is of any help to you, but it's what i know about US Explorer parking brakes.

I would post this question in the UK Sub-Forum - lots of expertise there on the RHD vehicles. Good luck.

Good idea! Thread moved "across the pond"

Hi there.
The handbrake can be adjusted using the inspection hole at the base of the backplate. The oval hole should have a grommet in it. you can poke a flat screwdriver thro and turn the spur wheel to adjust. BUT.....
Rather than just try to adjust it may be a better idea to whip the wheels off and remove the disc to have a look at the state of the shoes and mechanism. The hand brake uses separate shoes that work on the inside of the top hat of the disc. These could be glazed along with the disc surface they run on if you see what I mean. A de glaze with some emery will pay dividends. Also grease up the linkage.

If you do a search of threads by Howard using search term handbrake, he has done a good write up on it along with info on a lever that "freezes" and gets bent.

If you get it all working properly just remember to release it before driving as this will glaze the pads an disc again!!!!
