i am running a 40 series flowmaster with nothing after it. will they not test it unless there is a tailpipe on it? will it pass smog without a tailpipe? i put in a new radiator, thermostat, air filter, spark plugs, oil, oil filter within about the last month if that makes a difference. the reason im asking is because the regestration sticker is expired on the plate but my dad(cop)says if they run the plates it will pass but they wont give us the sticker untill we get it smog tested and i dont want to be getting pulled over all the time for this reason. thank you

Technically just running a muffler should be ok. HOWEVER, from what I have read somewhere, they wont be able to test you if they have nothing to hook up their system / sniffer to. What I mean is that the tailpipe has to extend past or near the vehicles edge for them to hook up the sniffer tube

If you really want to cut your exhaust after the flowmaster the maybe run a tempo pipe - even exiting to the side (past the rear door for a 4dr) then remove it afterwards

good luck with smog

Mine just drops right after the muffler too and it passed smog last friday at a test only place. The past 5 trucks of mine have been like this. You might need at least one foot of pipe then turn it down.

sweet i was kinda worried im moving to colorado this summer and ill be taking a 94 explorer 4.0 with some 36's on it and a bunch of other stuff....glad to know most other peoples explorers passed.
