Whats up boys !!!!!

I have a question about my exhaust... and future exhaust plans...

In the state of PENNSYLVANIA, if i cut my exhaust piping just behind the muffler... and weld a turndown pipe directly after the muffler - so it ends right before my rear axle... would that pass PA state inspection ??????

i want to do exactly what 86EXPLORER86 did to his X...

heres a link, you have to scroll down the page a little bit

single inlet/outlet...

so im clear

....Here is some info I found...;)

"(5) An exhaust system shall extend and
discharge completely to the outside edge
of the vehicle body, including a truck
bed, or as originally designed."

...Straight from the PDOT...This is just basic information but it should help...

Maybe stop by a Dunkin Donuts and talk to a cop ;). Or stop by your local DMV and have a chit chat.

They want it to come out from under the auto because in the old days the exhaust would fill the inside of the car and kill ya. The newer autos are sealed better for sound.

That will not pass in PA. As stated above, the tailpipe has to discharge outside the body or as designed from the factory. A dump in front of the axle won't cut it.

The '97 F-150 came with the exhaust in front of the rear passenger tire, but it came from the factory that way. You really should go talk to a local garage and see if they will help you decipher the inspection laws.

Correct, but the pipe still exits outside the bodyline that way. I am not a licensed inspection mechanic, but I live in PA and my take is that your idea would not pass.

imo you'll be safer just having it dump out behind the rear tire.

If you're just looking for more sound, another option that is probably more of a PITA then it's worse is a muffler relocation. You can have a turn down dump out behind the rear tire or out the back. GM's usually have their mufflers located WAY to the rear and have a turn down at the end; I personally think it looks like crap because anyone behind you can see your muffler, but when you get an exhaust setup done it sounds a lot meaner.

thanks alot guys for the speedy answers !!!

im goin to go to my exhaust shop who instaled my muffler and see what there take is on the subject...

i have seen a few ford rangers with cut offs that dump in front of the axle, around my way... but maybe they just got a hook up somewhere

alot of the newer vehicles have the muffler so far back bc that is the only place that has room for the huge mufflers car companies install to follow emissions laws. i.e. the trailblazer, most hondas, even the last gen camaro. no room anywhere else on the car. but yeah it is ugly to see a rusty muffler behind the bummper of the car in front of you.

wv law also states that the exhaust should exit the vehicle outside of the body after the rear tire of trucks and suvs. i wanted to have mine exit in front of the pass rear tire but was told it would not pass inspection. now that i dont care and can get a sticker, i might do it.

I would just do a 90 degree bend after the muffler or angle it so it exits right in front the rear tire then throw a square or angle cut tip

macknos...

please explain your theory...

im intrigued

after looking at what you said MACKNOS...

the frame is completely in the way... unless i go through or under the frame...

bad ford design :( why couldnt the frame be tucked into the body !!!!

hmm I completely forgot about how low the frame sits. time for a body lift haha. im sure if I take a look I can come up with something or you can throw a exhaust valve after the muffler. open it to make loud close to flow out the rear. I had a electric one on my evo and it passed pa inspection

I don't know if it was stated before(too lazy to read) but to clear up the pa inspection laws the exhaust must run past the passanger compartment. So a pickup just needs to run behind the cab and can be dumped under the bed. For suv cars and vans the exhaust has to exit the body completely. If you just want sound then run a 3 inch pipe out back. Basically you need cats. And a muffler along with it exiting the passenger compartment. Another loop hole with the pa inspection you can pass without a muffler as long as you have a tip with the resinator material in it. Like the metal with holes inside. When I went to get my inspectors license I learned a lot of loop holes
