Looking for anyone that can give me info on my 1999 Merc Mountaineer AWD, 5.0 off road performance? Thanks
I am not a mud bogger by any means, Just moved to Idaho from IL. and never had my Merc off road. I guess mud traction, light hill climbing, shallow fording things like that?
My concern is I have no low range so I guess I should ask about my limitations with the AWD compared to 4WD.

Traction?

Depending on what your goals are there are many options

tires....well here's a topic that is open for debate, but I prefer BFG. Mud terrain if you are in the crud a lot, All terrain if your mostly city driving with occasional of pavement journeys.

Lockers or LS is also a big topic, Units are offered by several of the major manufacturers. What are you looking for? Selectable locker? LS? lunchbox style? spool?

see now i have BFG A/T and a stock limited slip and have never had a real problem, not to say that i havnt gotten stuck cause i have. The wheeling that i do is not that crazy and i do drive a lot on the street. but dreamr is right it all depends on what your goals are

hey ken i have offroaded in my 96 with 4x4 auto when it was stock, it performed good just use your judgement dont thro you stock turck down a trail with ruts carved out by 35s just take things slow and run the easy trails first test your limits then hit the hardtrails

ud be suprized i only have 32s gy mt/r , i thro it in 2x4 sometimes an rip **** up just to see if i can get stuck majority of the time 2wd is all i need.

just go out an have fun, u get sutck u get stuck?

oh an i think awd works like 4x4 auto

Sorta... the AWD t-case has a constant power split where as auto pulses power to the front as needed.....

And as explorer#2 noted for some LS and AT tires keeps you from getting stuck.......yet I have been stuck with 33"MT's and the e-locker engaged :D It all depends on your goals :p:
