My first experience with an Explorer was being parked next to one at a drive in movie showing of Jurassic Park. I remember looking over at the Explorer as one was being ripped apart by the T-Rex on the screen. Made the movie a bit 3D as I imagined being in that X!
At the time I thought it would be a great vehicle for my wife who was nervous about driving in upstate NY snows but the X was way out of our budget at the time, and it wasn't meant to be.
Since then we avoided it because we didn't like the truck like ride and the lack of space when compared to the other vehicles we ultimately chose.
We owned a Freestyle followed by a Taurus X, and then a Flex. We loved them all for their spaciousness and drive-ability. While we jokingly called the Freestyle the stylefree we loved our limited Taurus X but when the lease was up, we couldn't pass up the Ecoboost Flex. It's been a love hate relationship with the Flex. We loved it's engine and gas mileage and we are part of the love it group when it comes to it's styling. Unfortunately, our Flex betrayed us mechanically, having far too many issues for us to consider keeping it out of warranty.
My wife so loved the Flex she wanted to replace it with another one but I felt I couldn't stand to see another one in the driveway. I felt we knew the car so well that we would never be able to trust the model. She reluctantly test drove the Explorer and to my great surprise, loved it. She doesn't feel she is giving anything up over the Flex, which had been her greatest concern.
So the day has come, we pick up or X today after work. 29 days from order to delivery. Here's hoping for years of happy motoring.
