Pioneer AVIC-D1 in a 2000 Ford Explorer

I picked up an avic-d1 a couple of weeks ago and was waiting for a wiring harness to hook up my remote controls that are built into my steering wheel so I can control the deck from remote. They came in and I scheduled an install to get this put in.
After about 30 minutes I got a call from them stating that it would not fit. (Even though they said it would a couple of weeks ago). I looked at it with the guy and the radio pulls out from the front of the opening. The new Avic-D1 is just about a 1/4" too tall for the opening. It kind of looks like it may fit in from the back though. Anyone know if this will work on my truck?
