Pizza boss said he doesn't want me delivering in my Explorer if it's leaking.

Post number 318 has been selected as best answered.

Different vehicles, not more than once on each, 94 Ranger and 2002 Saturn

Oh I see. Anyways the truck is sitting outside my mechanics shop right now. Had to get it towed to him last night as the mechanic and his son who came out to see it yesterday (I even picked up the starter) said he needs the thing on a hoist or higher off the ground to give him enough space to be able to change the starter because of the location of the starter. He needs to use long extensions and his jack can't get the truck high enough.

Now that I have a bit of time, I'm going to return my new starter and get a rebuilt one for half the price.

have you checked its not the solenoid? it mounts on top, and can be very loose, or fail.

I think the solenoid is attached to the starter? The mechanic yesterday said it would be the starter and could just be the solenoid but from my calling around nobody here sells only the solenoid. Have to buy a starter that comes with a new solenoid.

I am going to return the Napa starter that I bought yesterday for $200 as I picked up a rebuilt one from a local shop here for half the price, that does very good rebuilds on starters and alternators (have a rebuilt alternator in my Honda that is still going strong).

Hopefully my mechanic can install it over the next couple of days. I wonder how difficult it's going to be for him and his helpers at the shop to push it into his shop from the street to hoist it up.

Its still early and ive put on about 150km on the explorer since putting in a bottle of the AT205 and I checked under the truck last night after it's been sitting there for 36 hours and it leaked noticeably less (like a 80% reduction) than before putting in the AT205. Will give it more time but so far this looks promising

rockauto sells the solenoids. not sure where to get locally. hopefully a starter solves it.

yep the at205 is some good stuff! hey, a reduction is a reduction! :D

Okay thanks. The local starter and alternator shop here that sells rebuilds have very fair prices. Only $105 for the rebuild with a 1 year warranty.

Will give the AT205 more time but so far it looks like a great product.

I should have my truck back soon.

Got the new starter put in. Truck is ready and picking it up shortly. This should really help the truck start in the cold winters, I shouldn't have anymore struggling starts in even 0C temps.

Not good. I got the truck back but there is a shake/shutter when turning the wheel left and right. My mechanic never took the wheels off to replace the starter. Hope it's not from getting it towed. Thoughts on the sound?

You have air in the power steering, most likely. . Go start it and going real slow turn the wheel lock to lock several times.

No big deal.

bleed the PS system as mike said

You're a genius that worked. Seems fine now. Huge relief. Thank you! How does air get out of the system if I never take the cap off the PS res?

PS fluid more dense than air, air wants to get to the highest point possible, so as such when it circulates fluid it gets to the top. you dont need to remove the cap since its a sealed system, so nothing can get in or out, and by removing the cap it just fills it with outside air than inside system air

Oh I see. I wonder how air even got in the system, I'm guessing from when I got it towed 20km up the highway on Sunday night. Had a big scare when I picked up the truck. It starts up much better and quicker now with the rebuilt starter. Now back to focusing on the AT205.

They turned the wheels with the motor off while working on it. Or, when they drug it up on the trailer. That’s how it got in. Happens every time. There’s nothing to be concerned about.

The reservoir has a vented cap. If it didn’t something would blow have to give when the fluid got hot, and expanded.

That makes sense, just glaf that air was all it was. Big relief. Truck starts up so much better now

Spray down your steering shaft U joints with lots of fluid film, working it into the bearings. They can bind up and there are no repair parts. The fluid film will keep them going a long time. The lower U is likely exposed by now.

He should be lathering the vehicle with fluid film everywhere he can spray it.

Maybe I have to give it more time for the ATP205 to work? So far it's been 325km that I've driven with the first bottle of ATP205 poured in. I think someone here said it took 1000 miles of driving before he noticed ATP205 working on his ford?

I checked the oil today cold and it was right on the max line. So far been driving it and it doesn't seem to leak any less with less oil.

If it leaks the same with less oil, then I may as well keep it overfilled by a quart just to give me peace of mind that I will never run low on oil.

How much oil is it from the Empty mark on the dipstick to the full hask mar, 1 qrt?
