hey everyone, i was curious if anybody plows with their explorer? I have not seen many, but there are a few kits out there for the explorers. Also if anyone does could you post a pic and if you have a V6 or a V8? Thanks.

Mbrooks420 has plow on his. His is a v8, though. It would be a bad idea to put one on a v6, with the weaker engine and transmission.

What are you looking to plow?

just my driveway and maybe a few other driveways really. Im not looking at putting a big plow in though, instead i am looking at the snow sports plows. The ones that don't have any actuators, they are pretty much just a blade haha. the weight of them is under 150 lbs so i figred it would not be too bad.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I was glancing around, and it seem that if you have the v6 you will burn out your transmission very quickly. It is also not recommended to use an explorer with a plow, but if you do, doing driveways is the only thing it should be used for.

Do a search for snow plow, and you will find info on it, and you can decide yourself weather (hehe:D) you want to or not.

yea i actually just searched... i probably should have done that first. These trannys seem pretty strong but i would be worried about doing harm. If i plowed it low gears it should protect the tranny though shouldn't it?? i gotta think this one through.

Just an idea, we got a used ATV relatively cheap w a 48 inch plow, works great even in 2 feet of snow and can do the job fast, and be a fun summer tool without the plow on.

denver, i looked into that because i would love to have an atv but even used ones are pretty expensive.:( the plow im looking at is actually used and im trying to get for $300 locally. Its a good deal, but i gotta look into if my ex can handle it.

lol i was waiting for it, i really was.. but thats wht i used to use. And honestly, a plow could be fun :D

I've always wanted a plow, but I don't have enough of a reason..like, anywhere near enough.

Yeah, Plowing Will eat Your transmission up. When I'm plowing (In a Chevy 2500) almost half of it is In reverse. The V6 Trannys are known to be weak as well. I some times worry about the transmission in the 2500 I use to plow with. I wouldn't do it in my explorer. The amount of Gear shifting/Sharp turning/Force on the front end will mess up your vehicle pretty good. If it's a beater, then I wouldn't be to worried about it, but.....If it's Your DD, then I'd look into the ATV a little more. And, just out of Curiosity, how do you make the blade go up and down with out Hydrolics? Some kind of Gear? Good luck.

haha by lifting it with your hands. This is a very primitive plow, thats why i think it would be ok, but now im not so sure. Also it does not plow in reverse. Here is the link to to website so you can see what i am talking about.

they have videos to show you how it works and everything. thanks!

Snowsport plow

works great on my mounty just got it using it on the back hitch till I get the front hitch cant find one anywhere for the front of a 97 mounty I guess I have to make it I just want to buy it though! :exp:

Nice, do you have a V6 or a V8? Thanks for the info!

Holy Crap, that seams pretty cool. I could see that not being a Big deal. If I had the money, I'd probably get one. I thought you meant a full hydrolic plow. Those would cause problems. I would still be carefull with the Transmission. Get some good protection on it (EXT. cooler and temp sensor) And you should be fine as long as you keep an eye on the temp. Looks Cool.

Thank you for your insight and know how since you are a plow owner:) i did not think this would be to much of a deal because it is about 150 lbs when full plows are 550+ lbs but I wanted to check. We will have to see if I do get it but I think its not a bad investment. I definately think you are right with the extra protection with a trans temp gauge and trans cooler though. Thanks again!

Actually, I don't own one, I just play an owner on TV (....er....plow for a Landscaping Company). Being the kind of Guy I am, I asked the owner about all that stuff that I said. I do, however, Have Expierence Driving with one. So...I'm close to owning one, and I'd buy one if I had the money. Good luck what ever you do.

haha oh well, thats close enough. I ended up not getting it. I thought for awhile and I wouldn't use it that much. If I want to later i'll get it. For now im gonna buy some new toys and have them sit in my garage until spring break.:D
