Year, Model & Trim Level
1996 Explorer Sport
Hi, I own a 1996 explorer sport which belonged to my father in law.

We are having an argument about the trim of the truck. All the papers and features indicates that it is an sport version as anyone can tell by the huge logo on the liftgate, but he insist that the fender type, the winch, rims, running boards and other stuff corresponds to some "plus" model, that back in day added quite a few bucks, or at least that's what he says.

I can't find any info about a plus model on the internet, so I have some pictures of the truck, including VIN so maybe you guys can help me identify this so called "plus" model.

thank you very much

Just looks like a an XLT sport to me with an aftermarket winch...

Looks like a 2 door version of my 1996 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer.
All the same fender flares, running boards and rims, except for the winch.

Ford offered a "premium" trim package on the Sports, which consisted of larger wheel flares with step bar, upgraded center console with rear HVAC controls, power drivers seat, OAT/compass on rearview mirror, and fog lights. I believe all of this was included in one package.

I have 2 Sports, one "base" and one "premium". Both are 2000s, but others might have had diffenent options in the upgrade package depending on the model year...?

The winch is definitely an aftermarket. Ford seems to have used different wheel types and engines (OHV and SOHC) randomly in all Sports. (2000 was last year for the OHV.)

I think the red "W" behind the grill stands for WARN Industries, a winch manufacturer.

Indeed. I've seen other trucks with the same winch, I thought it was a factory original.

Yes! this match the truck's accessories. It does have a larger wheel flare, but only running boards. The center console has rear controls also. Power drivers seat, compass on top, fog lights also, ambient light sensor (i don't know if it's standard). It's a 2 door 4x4 OHV Automatic trans, R16 wheels after the original R15 recall.

Do you know how much this truck costs today compared with a regular sport in the same condition?

Thank you.

As you can see the build date of 12/96, the differences in a USA sold vehicle for 1997, very similar to the one in the first post. Most notable are the changes in tire PSI from 26 to 30psi
and even though the same type of vehicle, mine has a slightly higher GVWR, for whatever reason.

What's the price difference between yours and a regular sport?

In the used market the price difference would be negligible. When new it was probably a few thousand more than the stripped down base model, but less than a decently equipped 4 door, or a V8 model.

There’s nothing very special about it, and it surely wasn’t a very exclusive model.

Being a “Sport” simply means it’s a 2 door.

How do you search for this particular model? I want to find how much is this truck being sold today.

The extra options don't add anything to a 23 year old vehicle. Depending on condition, number of miles, 2WD or 4WD and your location I'd say you're looking at about $1000-$1300 tops, but look on your local craigslist to see what people are asking for similar "by owner" sales in your area.

I sold a '97 Sport XLT (equipped like yours) for $650 2 years ago, because it needed tires, brakes, front suspension work, intake gaskets and had 265,000 miles on it. It still ran and drive well, but wasn't worth the effort & cost for me to repair and the interior and paint showed it's miles.

in the USA Sports (2 door explorer) do not hold much value at all
People just do not like the 2 door versions as much as the 4 door counterparts.
a 1996-97 Sport is lucky to fetch more then $1000 these days, in pristine condition with low miles you might be able to get $1500?
Craigslist is a good way to see what it is worth, compare your truck to similar models in your area

You’d search for Explorer Sport, or 2 door Explorer. It’s typically worse less than a 4 door, and won’t fetch any special price. It’s surely worth more than 1,300. I’d says yours is worth likely around 2-3,000 if the mileage is very low, there’s no real rust and it’s an OHV.

The only real added value is the winch. There’s nothing special about it otherwise, other than it’s not a base model.

It does have 90k milles, no rust at all. 96 sport is OHV.

The market here for the year and condition is around 3-4,5k (outside the US) and the regular ones are around 2-3,5k

in all respect, i hate it when someone asks "whats my truck worth?". in reality, what its worth to you would be different to someone else. i as well as some on here have thousands and thousands of dollars into it, and will never get it back unless i parted it out. your truck is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. if i sound like i am ranting, im really not. buying and selling these trucks over the years thats really what it boils down to is what someone is willing to buy it for.

What it's worth (private party sell) all depends on where you live. Where I live, unless it has under 100k, it's not worth more than $1000-$1300 max in average condition. If you have receipts recent for repairs, new brakes, tires and battery - add more valve.

IIRC I only paid $1200 for our '97 Sport XLT 5 years ago. Of course I don't live in Chili.
