My 94 was pinging badly so I cleaned the maf and reset computer. Worked great no pinging ran great for a cpl of days then on the highway the Check Engine light came on and I pulled over and shut down and took a look under the hood , when i restarted the light was gone, now it idles fine but when you start out it gets up to about 30 then bucks a little and theres a poping sound coming from under the hood on the passengers side. Like a small backfire.
What could be wrong ??
Thanks all
Problem solved turned out to be a bad plug
Now getting 18mpg after mafs cleaning and new plugs
haven't got that in over a year. WAHOO!

95% of the time a Check Engine light comes on it is emissions related. Possibly EGR or sensor causeing you to run rich. Buy or borrow a cheap code scanner and pull the code.

:fire: It's been a week since mine has started doing the same thing. I had a tune up done @ 130 bucks and now the dealer says i need a 300 dollar set of spark plug wires. My father in law owns a shop and is going to put them on. I'll let you know if it stops. BTW....father in law says 130 bucks for the wires...not 300 like the dealer. gheeeeeeesh

$130 for plug wires??????!!!!!!! You gotta' be kidding!
Autozone has Bosch for $30.00 for my 96 EB V6....

130 for wires is nuts!!!! As drwambo said, you can get a decent set of wires for about $30. Napa lifetime warranty wires run $35.49. I think you need to find a cheaper garage than your father-in-laws too!!

BTW - I wasn't necessarily recommending Bosch wires, I just was able to find their online price quickly as an example. I'read threads here that suggest "Premium" wires as the way to go, and others that suggest "Decent" plug wires. I'm no EXpert, but I have an MG midget as well, and it's motor, while simpler doesn't care at all whether it's wires are black or glow like a rainbow when firing.....

Ric, check your vacuum lines. Make sure they are all connected and don't have any leaks.

I KNOW IT'S BEEN A WHILE FOR THIS POST, BUT I BET THE SPARK PLUG THAT WAS MESSED UP WAS #5--- DRIVERS SIDE MIDDLE ONE??? I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I'VE REPLACED THAT SPARK PLUG MANY TIMES. TRY TIGHTING DOWN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM
