Post fuel pump installation: couple questions

Hey all,

For starters, what should the pressure be on a new fuel pump? I got in installed yesterday and my issues were definitely the fuel pump! Much better response, acceleration, and no hesitation or jerky driving. However, according to my pressure gauge, I'm only getting around 30 psi. I thought I read somewhere that it should be around 35-40 psi? I've also recently replaced the FPR and fuel filter so that shouldn't be an issue.

Surprisingly, the tank was a lot cleaner than I expected. There was some sediment present (and small pools of water!). Fortunately the project took longer so I was able to drain and let the tank dry overnight. Next day I cleaned out most of the sediment. The pump itself was remarkably shiny on the inside of the tank. I know Carter made pumps for Ford, but were they stamped with the ford name or the carter one? The one in the tank had the Carter name on it. Suspecting this pump may have been replaced once before?

Are you using an in-line pressure gauge to see the fuel pressure when driving, or just checking the psi with a handheld gauge with the engine at idle? 30psi might be fine for a new fuel pump at idle, if performance is good then the pressure is rising as it should on acceleration even if you can't check the psi it's reaching.

Most pump assemblies were probably stamped with the Ford logo, but there could certainly have been some batches that were used that had the Carter name on them. From what I've seen, the factory pump assemblies were made from mild steel, and rust terribly, to the point they rust apart and into the tank at 150-200K in winter climates. If the pump assembly you pulled out was in really good shape externally, and the lock ring wasn't thin or so badly rusted it folded like cardboard when removing it, it's possible the pump assembly was replaced.
 






Ring was thin and rusted solid. Had to pry it of. Top was very rusty, but assembly inside the tank looked almost new. Considering this area is notorious for dirty fuel (even news has done reports on it), i may guess this has been replaced before.
