power antenna probs

the power antenna on my 98 merc seems to work fine, it just doesn't go down. When I shut the truck off, you can hear it "whine" like it wants to. Easy fix, or pain in the neck?? Thanks for anything.

I have had two cars with power antennas, its a novel concept, but they are a huge PITA. I had to work on both of mine several times, the have a plastic "spine" inside that pushes the mast up and down. They can sometimes be taken apart and fixed, but its not worth the effort, IMO. I would suggest you get an antenna and cable from a fixed mast truck and replace it, or leave yours alone. You can probably just unhook the motor and leave yours up if the noise bothers you.

There are repair masts, for about $25, much easier than nswapping the whole antenna. The top nut of the antenna is removed, the radio is turned on, remove mast, insert new mast(plastic cable/teeth), turn off radio, install top nut and cover. Ebay, good luck.

I would get a "whip" style antenna (stock on my 2000xlt), sure it doesn't go up and down but it doesn't ever have to be replaced either.

After fighting this with 2 different aftermarket units, and no success, I agree
