whining is usually associated with air in the system, maybe one of the o rings on the high or low pressure line is bad or maybe a fitting letting air in.

you could jack the front of the truck up so the wheels are off the ground, take the cap off your power steering rezzy and start the truck and turn your steering back and forth.look in the rezzy to see if any air bubbles showed up.

i'm working on a similar problem now,i think my culprit is one of the o rings.or like was said above your pump could just be on it's last leg.:(

Hmm, my parents had a windstar and it had a whining power steering pump, the dealer's solution was to overfill the reservoir. It was a pretty pronounced whine, but I don't know if that would help on an explorer.

well listen to his, today i poped the hood open and let te engine run, its not my power steering, it my alternator! who would think that would make a similar noise! the power steering pump isnt makin any noise.... its the alternator :/ so weird.... pretty sure its not the pump now, looks like and sounds like its comin from the alternator....
