I don't know how the gas pedal feels on other explorers, but mine seems to have a lot of slack before it picks up, about maybe 1/2" or so. If yours is different, how do i fix this?

the slack is needed.... however if you are horribly bothered by it, do a search for throttle cable mod.....

I second the throttle cable mod. I think all the cables stretch over time. I used a round fishing line weight and crimped and soldered it around the cable by the gas pedal to take up the slack. Others have used the zip tie method. Big difference in response.

I zip tied mine best thing ever.

There is actually supposed to be a plastic gromit on the gas pedel to remove most of the slack however they are almost always broken and gone.

triple zip ties for me.

I used zip ties on mine as well.

Please explain...

(The kickdown cable problems can be overcome...)

Yeah I dont understand either, a little bit of slack is not really needed as long as your TB plate (butterfly) closes fully and opens fully, the kick down is self adjusting and can be reset quite easily.
The cable has a spring on it already to help make up for the slack, but once the cable stretches a small spacer of some sort to remove what stretched is ideal.
( dont trust zip tie, I used aluminum tube and crimped it)

Im not saying your wrong but if a ziptie breaks the only thing thats gonna happen is you get the slack back.

this is true and you will need another zip tie :)
I still dont trust it to hold forever like I do the crimped aluminum, thats all I was saying.
:)

Plus in my case it would have required about 3-4 tiny tiny zip ties to take up the slack, easily accomplished by cutting the tube to the length I need and crimp on with robogrips :)

It sure is a pain to get under there and put on those zip ties. I guess you need to be a little person to do it easily.

Have had no problem with my round fishing line weight but I did crimp it and then sort of soldered the crimp shut in the crack that was left over after crimpimg. Been 2 years now. This may also be a more permanent alternative to the zipties.

please explain how to fix my problem. where does the zip tie, or the cable crimp go?

They go right around the cable where it attaches to the gas pedal. Lay on the floor, contort your body, bring a good flashlight and it will become clear where to crimp or ziptie. You may want to search for the throttle cable mod which was the thread that started it.

Do a search as suggested. You first want to have somebody actually push the gas pedal as you watch the throttle body butterfly valve, if it opens fully and closes fully then you decide if you still want to remove the slack, After removing the slakc again make sure it opens fully and closes fully.

The key to not screwing it up is making sure that the throttle body butterfly closes ALL THE WAY when the gas pedal is not pressed.

If the butterfly stays open when you're not pressing the gas, that is very bad for...what comes to mind...your brakes, your driving, your mileage, and your idle...

your transmission, your wallet, your clutch (if 5 speed), hahahaha just about everything if it is not fully closed.
