I tried to check the fluid level in my BW4404 and unscrewing the top plug (of the two located in the lower half of case), I had gushing out some ATF fluid, like a cup worth, before I screw it back in. Vehicle was level (more or less). Had anybody have that experience? Is that the proper way to check the level? Maybe I was not completelly level I guess?
The two plugs that I am talking about are the ones visible in this picture:

Well, I assumed that was overfilled while on a sloped driveway.
I drain it and filled with Mercon V - it took 1.25 qt, close of what the book said (1.3 qt).

SoNic67, how difficult was it to drop / replace your BW4404 transfer case? Needing to replace mine. My 97 Explore AWD is making that God awful “popping” noise when taking off from a stop sign / under load.

Also, what was your final thoughts on removing the front drive?

Thanks,
