Quality Paint Cheap PICS

Ok, I've had a thread on here forever about when my truck was backed into/side swiped. Long story short it was totaled, insurance didn't cover, I was 17 (only 18 now) and hadn't done any bodywork at all. I put a fender on it; followed by a door. I then decided to repair my rusted doglegs, at which point I realized how replacing the door was a total waste. And one thing led to another, and I got the idea to paint the whole truck. This weekend weather providing I'll remove all doors and rear hatch to paint all the jambs. The next weekend or so after that I'll be spraying the whole truck. So far I've painted the plastic runningboards and it's turned out great. It was my first time holding a spray gun, let alone using it. I bought a paint kit online from Kirker Paints. They're located in Kentucky and sell medium grade paint, along with House Of Kolors. Their website is: www.smartshoppersinc.com

I bought the Bright Orange Metallic Urethane Base/Clear kit for $229 and it can be found on the main page.

Here's a pic of the runningboards painted:

I highly recommend this paint as do the bodymen and painter at the dealership where I work:thumbsup:

...I like the color...:biggthump

...are you going to do the whole truck???...You should do a step by step "How to" on it...;)

Looks nice. Just to be safe- is that the right mask for the paint you are using?
Many of todays coatings require a 'fresh air mask' with an air feed.
Just asking. Good Luck

Really nice job around the doors, jambs, etc. - Sorry to hear you are having exposure problems, I did a quick search and the first hit was Turbine Products, one of their offerings is a complete fresh air mask, self contained system. for around $ 300. I think you mentioned working at a dealership, the shop manager might be able to arrange to sign a mask out to you over a weekend when it is not needed.
If you check with some nearby smaller shops, you might be able to rent or borrow the right mask. I'm sure a small shop owner would be impressed by your efforts, he might let you work off an agreed amount. More than once I've seen that exact thing work out as a future job offer. (That speaks volumes more about someone's work ethics, than anything on a job application or resume.) Just from walking in the shop, looking for a part or a tool.
The local auto parts stores (see who delivers to your shop) that sell paint and body supplies might rent or have equipment that they have taken back. There is usually a salesman involved, the body shop manager will have his name or card. He will know who might help you out, or which shops to contact.
If you end up buying one it will be money well spent.
I look forward to seeing the completed project, you have lots to spray - be careful - and enjoy

nice job thats something i wana take up and learn

That looks awesome man, ive always wanted to take that up too, it doesnt seem so-so hard haha, probably save a TON of money, and make a TON if you paint stuff for people haha.

I do believe I will do a how-to for you guys. This is the right mask, when I bought it from Harbor Freight it was a pesticide mask, but I bought new filters for paint and put them on. Honestly, it's really not that hard (coming from an 18 year old who has painted four items in his whole life). The hardest part is the prep. I sanded everything smooth with around 320, 120 in the rough spots-but then right back with 320. I then used some wax and grease remover to thoroughly clean the item to be painted. I've also heard you can use paint thinner. I then checked my surface to see if anymore imperfections remain. If there's not you can go back over the panel with a red scuff pad to ensure good adhesion. Then clean once more with wax and grease remover. Mix up some basecoat and filter it into the cup of your gun. Just before you shoot use a tack rag to ensure no hair or fiber is on the item. Spray. Make sure to let each coat flash before applying another. Clean your gun. Mix up some clear coat. Spray. Clean gun. Watch paint dry...If you want to see someone spray professionaly go to youtube and search "spray car" or "paint car". The majority of the results should be from ExpertVillage. I highly encourage new painters to watch these videos as I found them educational. Most of the stuff won't apply to you because you're not in a million dollar classic car restoration shop; but the basics apply everywhere.

Just Remember

The #1 enemy is dirt and in Ohio cold weather is too...lol

paint and related solvents and such ARE FLAMMABLE also so watch it

Once again I highly encourage you to check out Kirker Paint

Ok, so I keep making the rookie mistake of under-estimating prep time for EVERYTHING. I was planning on taking off the rear hatch and all the doors, prepping them, and painting them in a weekend. WRONG. I removed the hatch, prepped it and the jamb, painted the jamb. I was going to paint the hatch the following day but I got a bad headache and decided to install the hatch as is. This past weekend I decided I'd knock it down and try to tackle one side (2 doors). Wrong again. I removed both doors, scuffed and sanded everything, but then cursed by another headache I simply re-installed the doors feeling somewhat accomplished knowing they're already scuffed. Here's a pic with doors removed on the driver's side.

Believe it or not this was done with a harbor freight spray gun. It was my first time painting, and I wanted to see what a real budget paint job would turn out like. This isn't the cheapest gun by far, but it isn't a SATA or DeVilbress. Actually I think this is the most expensive Habor Freight gun available, and believe me the results and pretty good. Just make sure to clean it, like you would with any other gun.

Here's the link

I believe it's a campbell hausfield....like a thirty gallon or so. I use a regulator and water filter on the gun. The compressor also has a regulator mounted on it. It puts out enough air to keep spraying continuously

Ok, I know it's once again been a while, but I now have all the jambs painted, including the hatch and hood.....here's the pics

I'll post the final pics as soon as the paint gets sprayed and is dry....

not bad at all. better then i can do (i cant paint for ****). at lest your doing it right by removing everything you can for a color change. when you go to do the body, i would recommend you using a sealer coat. that way, you will not have any differences in color on your top coat. also, i do agree that you have the correct mask, but you might be getting headaches from painting. when i did my truck, my buddy started to get wicked headaches after he was done doing any painting. just a thought.

WOW! That is looking good so far.:thumbsup:

cool, keep us updated

Well, I believe the headaches are caused by the paint. Not by breathing it in though. I work at a GM dealer in the service dept. About a month ago my left eye swelled shut and I had undescribable pain coming from behind it. Soon after followed headaches. I figured I may have got something in it from work and with my eye being sore/swollen it caused a headache. Well after seeing two eye specialists with both of them scratching their heads I'm thinking the overspray has got into my eye(s). I have a pain behind my left eye at this moment, and it feels like there's pressure building behind it along with in my left temple. My eye is redish, sore, swollen. I've had this headache since Sunday night, and I started spraying Sat. around noon. In about four to five days the inflamation goes away along with the headaches. While at the eye doctor they gave me a shot in my eyeball (anti-biotic) to help with the "infection" I may have.

Will keep you guys posted, with both the headache and the paint job

i wounder if you are sensitized? (i was trying to find a good definition of it online. it basically means that your body starts to freak out around chemicals such as paint, or the ingredients or chemicals that make it up. you don't have to be spraying it, you just have to be near it). if monmix see's this, he will know what i am talking about.

It's weird because it's only my left eye.....it comes and gets dull but doesn't fully stop for around four days

I just found an article about being sensitized by paint, and it explains everything. I thought I had a cold on top of it one day, but I guess it was the paint causing cold chills and fever too. Thanks so much for leading me on to that, I'm going to continue researching. Maybe I'll borrow the painter's air-fed respirator when I finish it. I already wear the suit, gloves, half face respirator.....it's my eyes that are getting it
