Question on lifts

Even with 3.27's (the highest gearing Explorers came with), 32x11.5's are completely tolerable.

ok I looked on the door and saw a crap load of number letters and even a few undefineable characters. Im guessing the one that says 41 is what we are looking for. it was under axle.

EDIT: Nevermind, I think 41 is 3.27 open. So don't go over 32" unless you plan on regearing.

327 gearing

i have a 94 ltd with 32's with stock rims 96 f150 spacers war shackles new leafs with a extra leaf added for an extra 150lbs i had 327 gears it was crap on the hiway at 100kmh with a head wind it would down shift and up shift all the time changed axle gears to 373 WORKS GREAT
32's rub a little when making u-turns only rubbing my mud flaps

cheers

I have a 92 with 31's on a stock lift (not for long) and stock 3.73s. I only have the slightest rubbing at left turn max. It's not too bad, I just don't turn to max. I can't do the body lift because I have one of the few manual trannies in the X. and the shifter crushes any sized cup in the passenger holder when I put it in reverse. so if I got the extention, it would have an even loger throw.
I'm telling you this incase you ahve a 5-speed too.
so I'm going with the james duff stage one and f150 spacers.

My friend had 3.27's and 31's and it was terrible. I drove it a few times and it wasnt tollerable at all. We put an axle from a parts truck in that had 3.73's and it was back to normal. I dont think 3.27's should even exhist on the explorer. Yet alone with anything even slightly larger than stock tires.

when I still had 3.27 in my ex, I had 32's and it didn't seem all to terrible. I wheeled it quite a bit with it like that on some pretty steep hills too. Now that I have 4.10's, it's ALOT better though. Now with 35's and 4.10's it does very well. Nice power over hills, and the limited slip helps greatly in the front.
So, if you're only going to have this thing around town, I don't think 3.27's would be too bad for ya.
my $.02

so j602 you got a 2'' out of springs and spacers? thats exactly what i need to ward off effects of rear end sag plus make it look good. how much did that set you back and what brands would you recommend. thanks

Not exactly sure what you're talking about here. I had (at one time) Skyjacker 2" lift coils springs in the front, and Warrior lift shackles in the back. That got me about 2" of lift all around. If you have a lot of rear end sag right now, just do shackles or add-a-leafs only to get it back to level.

i didnt want a full blown raise so thats perfect. would you go with the 4 door f leafs? thanks

Yes, 4 door leaves would be a good improvement. You don't need them to do shackles, but if you ever want to do an AAL, you'll be able to with the 4 door leaves whereas you couldn't with the monoleaf. They should also ride and flex better than the mono.

im thinkin of just doin the 4 door or add-a-leaf and was wondering if theres any difference. also, say if i just tightened the torsion bars would it have the same effect as springs for the front or would both combined be better. im not to familiar with all this, so try to bear with me. thanks guys

You have a torsion bar suspension. It replaces the coil spring suspension found in earlier Explorers. The only suspension lift you can do for the front is to turn the torsion bar adjuster bolts to raise the front end up to 2". After that, unless you are 2wd, you would have to spend about $1500 for a full lift kit. If you have rear end sag right now, swap in 4 door leaves, put on shackles, and turn the torsion bars. See how it comes out after that and if you still have butt sag, put in the AAL's.

im on that, thanks alot man.

you DONT want to go with a body lift, trust me, a lot of trouble over 3". just go to autozone and get the shackle lift for your rear springs and get some coil spacers in front, it'll all cost you about $60 and you'll have enough clearance for 32's

3.27 + 32" tires = HORREDNOUS! hahah

I couldn’t keep up with semi's going up kills. Gas mileage was horrible also.

4.56 gears later = ahhhhhhhh yes... nice little whiplash when you hit the petal right.

buy leaf shackles for the back at autozone($15) and for the front if you want 2", get coil spacers, if more, get springs...

thread is a year old, and i posted as if it was started yesterday haha.
