I noticed a lot of people have experienced the same problem but there were no answers (that I could see). I guess I would like a new radio but are there ones available that will work with the steering wheel and contols in the back seat? Thanks

called Ford about radio

I called Ford about my radio, I told them that a month ago the radio was acting strange, it turned on and off by itself and the volume would change as well. I thought the thing was possessed!!!!Anyway, somehow it fixed itself. Now as I posted already, the display lights are out but the radio works fine. I told Ford that I have read at least 20 posts on this forum and others about this exact problem. She left me on hold for about 10 minutes, came back and said that they haven't received any complaints about this problem with the radio and that there is nothing that they can do. I wanted to tell her what she could do but the only thing I said was "well...I'm going to go on the internet right now and post what you've said to me." (she was so scared I'm sure.)

I guess I'll be going next week to get my radio fixed.

I'm sure you did this... but just in case... Did you check the fuse? I believe there's a fuse soley for the radio display.

Hi Blake,

Does disconnecting the battery cable for 10-15 min help? I have never seen such a touchy vehicle when it comes to the electrical system. Mine required cable disconnect and terminal cleaning about 2-3 times a year. Either due to radio problems or declining performance.

Good luck.

Thought I'd add that my 1998 w/41 k miles had the radio display go dead also. It was intermittent at first but now it's almost always dead. A few times when I first started the explorer the display would be there then quickly faded out.
Have'nt tried to troubleshoot it yet.

Ford Radio Display Problem ( Instructions Fix to the Problem)

1998 & Up FORD RADIO DISPLAY GOING DIM OR HAS GONE TOTALLY OUT BLANK

I HAVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOU IN HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM

www.caraudiolabs.net

or email : caraudiolab@aol.com

RE the ghost activities of the stock HUs that come and go, I know what causes this.. Something in your backseat is hitting the console controls and making your radio go wacko. This drove me crazy for a while and when i figured it out i felt so stupid...

I have a '99 Eddie Bauer Explorer and have this same problem. Occasionally it works fine, then fades out and is gone for weeks/months (no one's in my backseat either).

I called Ford and contacted my dealer - both told me to get a new system - hate to do this for a lack of display!

Anyone with DIY fixes, or results from Ford?

Anyone see that add on ebay to fix this problem. Just send your radio in for like $50 or something and they will recondition it for you. Saw it the other day while browsing...

Yah but the guy is trying to capitalize on peoples misfortune, and charging $19.99 for instructions how to fix!! What a joke.

I sent him the $10. I am sick of trying to figure it out. He put time and money into figuring this out and keeping his site updated. IMO it is worth it.

I am just going to get the board from the manufacturer and put it in myself for I know I dont have a loose solder prob.

I am gonna try using this guys instructions this weekendd if it works I will let you guys know what I did.:D

Looking forward to your results..:redexp:

I bet, but you have to pay me $1
:p

I wanna bench test this since it is cold out and I would like to test before I put it back together. Anyone with ideas on what wires are the power wires coming into the radio?

It will be difficult since the those prongs are recessed.
You dont want to short anything out. It would have been great if you had a extra harness.

found the power and ground mains. Just used the good ol volt meter. Won't be a problem bench testing it. Being the geek that I am I have tons of little clips and crap.

I'll take pics of the process. I just pulled it apart and the resistors read fine, so I gotta check all the solder points he recomends, but am at work and don't have time, so I'll stick it on my bench at home tonight and get started.!!!!!! YIPPEE an excuse to play with electronics and expensive meters!
