Hey all I have a question about the rear diff in my 2000 ranger. My truck is a 4x4 ex cab, 5.0 4r70w. Truck has around 150k on it. I went to check the diff fluid on it the other day. It was low and has some metal flakes on the magnet. It is a LS 4.10. I know for a fact the LS clutches are shot. I'm going to pull the cover and rebuild them this weekend. I'm wondering if the flakes are just clutch material. I can post pictures of it tomorrow. Both diffs we're about a quart low on fluid. I've had the truck for almost 2 years. But it sat a bunch until I got around to putting the motor in it. I've only put about 3k on it. The rear diff isn't making any noise. So I'm hoping it's ok. The only noise I have is from the awd t case. Which I think has a bad chain in it. So I'm running it without the front driveshaft. No not to be lazy or cheap. I'm swapping in a manual shift t case from an f150 in it. I just ran the awd one to put some miles on the truck.

Just clean it out real good, before you take the pictures. Use brake cleaner, and rags as you rotate the carrier.

You can zoom in on the pics and see the teeth better for a close up inspection.

More than likely, it's just clutch materials, but best to inspect for chips, breaks, and excessive heat damage.

ranger 8.8 is pretty tough axle they hold up to some pretty serious abuse
If you are going to rebuild the LS unit then you will have a good look at the gears
After that just swap fluids, I use 75W-140 synthetic and add the friction modifier

I just did an oil change on my Explorer 8.8, and the refill was about 2 1/4 quarts, so you still
had some oil in it. You're probably OK.
As 410Fortune mentioned, Ford specs the 75W-140 synthetic for the 2000 models.

According to the owners manual, it says the LS rears and not to be checked or serviced at unless there is a leak or needs repairs. Lifetime fluid.......

Throw that manual in the trash.

There is no such think as "life time" fluid regardless of what the manual says.

Lifetime oil hahaha

I by no means believe it. Just posting what the manual said. I'd like to know what makes life time oil!

That means parts needed to keep the truck running will be discontinued and no longer available before the oil reaches the end of it's service life.
