Whats a Ranger R8?

Ranger rear ends typically have drum brakes and are not quite as wide as the explorer

the ranger rear is also spring over so it would have to be modified to bolt into an explorer

also we need to know what year explorer

I don't know that it's 100% true, but typical car/Ranger 8.8's use a 28 spline axleshaft where the Explorer/F150 8.8's use a larger 31 spline axleshaft.

typical is right
As far as I know only the SOHC powered ranger trucks got the 31 splines, still spring over and still drum brakes

Newer Ranger Edge models may also have the larger tube, 31 spline 8.8

I see, i appreciate the input on this. What would the best thing for me to do be, being that im looking to put 33x12.50's? i currently have the 3.55 rear end

Don't rangers have 7.5's or did they change that?
'80's Rangers have a 7.5, as the 8.8 wasn't introduced to RBV's until '90/'91. '90's Rangers got both 7.5's and 8.8's. I'm pretty sure all 4.0 Rangers were outfitted with the 8.8. I'm also pretty sure that most 4 cylinder Rangers would have had the 7.5. What I'm not sure of is if the smaller V6 Rangers (2.9/3.0) would have gotten a 7.5 or 8.8 or either depending on other options.

What are you hopiing to accomplish with the axle swap? Are you just trying to change gear ratios, and you have a separate lift kit so you can fit the 33's or what exactly are you after?

Remember, if you're changing gear ratio in the rear (and you have 4wd), you also have to regear the front, too.

aha ok

the earlier Ranger 8.8's were 28 spline, the Ranger never got the larger tube 31 spline 8.8 until the SOHC was intorduced.

2.9L trucks had the 7.5

IMO for 32" tires you can locate a 95-2001 Explorer 8.8 with 4.10 gears and a factory limited slip at the junk yard, this sucker will bolt into your truck

As stated if you go with 4.10 ratio in the back and your 4x4 then you will need to install 4.10 gears up front as well

thanks for the input everyone, where would i need to find the 4.10 for the front end, same story as rear end? or is that a totally different story?

why dont you just have 4.10 ring and pinions installed in your truck without swapping axles, brakes, differentials, etc

Hokie why would welding be required? A gen II explorer rear end is a Gen II explorer rear end

the only difference I know of aside from different sway bar mounts and locations is trac bars or no trac bars from the factory

they are all spring under, 31 spline, disc brake

thanks, but im about to scrap the idea, sadly. The X got an offer i cant refuse ($5000) and that money is going into a Z with 8 inches of lift
