Can I take a 96 Explorer rear end with drum brakes and put it in my 2002 Explorer Sport? I guess my question is can i remove my disc brakes from my broken rear end and put them on the older rear end housing?

disc?

the 96 rear end should have discs

OK I'll check with the guy who has the ad. It said complete rear end drum to drum? So I thought he was speaking literally. It is Explorer and not a sport I believe. Is there a different gear for automatics? Mine is a manual 4X4 Sport.

91-94 had drums, 95+ should all have discs, except for some sports and sport tracs, I'm not to sure on the specifics of that one.

Yes there were different gear ratio's available. Check your door code to see what you have. It's on the drivers side door sticker, then compare it to the chart here. And obviously make sure the new axle has the same gears in it.

Correct, it should be disk, however, the E brake assembly is a drum of sorts and that may be what the seller is talking about. Either that or he's got an older axel. The ratio you have and the ratio of the axel in question is also listed on the tag mounted to one of the bolts in the housing cover.

Sport axels are physically the same, we put a 98 axel from my old Mountaineer into Kabukie's 03 sport with no problem. The only difference is the 4 door axel has a stabilizer shock on it and the sport has a funky steel and rubber donut weight stabilizer thing on it. You'll have to swap the donut thing but it's not a big deal.
