Re-Gearing is this right

off-road97Xplor, my 99 donor Explorer has 4.10's with the SOHC(30"tires). If you use taller tires, you might want a higher ratio than the 4.10's(is there a 4.30). If you get tires in the 29" range, you would probably be best to use the 4.10's, good luck,
Don

CDW6212R- Thanx, these are the tires and wheels I am getting. And there is no 4.30, the next one is 4.56.

Is there a contradiction here or what?

Yes, I thought you were hinting at shorter tires. Unless you want to give up more gas mileage, you would probably be better off with the 4.10's than the 4.56's. Good luck,
Don

well i was under the impression that he was going to 4.10s/4.56s so that he can "off road" as his name suggested. but yeah, if ppl trully wanted quicker launches from the line after regearing, then it'd probably be cheaper (in both the short and long run) to stick with the stock tire diameter or maybe a bit shorter tire [the same effect as getting a higher gear ratio as far as torque goes.. Torque=force*distance.... therefore, Force=torque/distance <- a smaller distance, or tire diameter, equals more Force] but wider to get more "rubber" on the road.

I mean if ur going to regear to a factor of 1.25 times ur stock ratio, but then get tires that are 1.25 times larger than ur stock tires, well its almost as if u didnt regear at all as far as torque goes! which is wierd kinda unless the larger tire diameter gives you an advantage - which it does in off roading for clearance, but not really sure it does much in street machines as a higher center of gravity is usually not something u want more of in general.

BUT, i could be wrong - which i am often ;) Homework TIME!!! Here have some lemonade:

4.30 gears are available for the 8.8 axle.

Part#: FMS-M-4209-G430M

And dont forget, if you REALLY wanted quick launches and you have a 4wd, turn the dial to 4Lo (or shift it to 4Lo if u have a manual)... you wouldnt get very far in that gear but hey, it'd feel like a rocket for those very few seconds! I think theres a thread on here about some guy who beat a Cobra to the 60 ft line by doing this.

60 ft off the line haha, thats like a 1/128th a mile.

maybe but 60 foot times matter quite a bit in drag racing. though it doesnt help if you get chased down and walked hard well before the line

When I originally came to this site it was an off-road explorer. Now its back to stock and I decided street explorer would be more practical. I'm in the process of talking to Rick to change my name.
Sorry if this confused anyone.

Also, to answer questions I want 4.10's or 4.56's for better launches/accelleration.

Are you running stock sized tires? is your stock gear ratio 3.73? if it s 3.73 id say stick with what you got, you wont be happy with lower gears. Lower gears might get you off the line quicker but you will have to shift more.

If you really want gears, you definatlly dont want anything bigger then 4.10s on the stock tire size.

I am using 4.56 on 32" tires. Its almost too much for the highway (going above 65 = 2500+ RPMs, bad for MPG) But in the mud doing like 15 mph its awsome! i can keep the RPMs around 2500-3000 and slide around, and that truetrac makes these beautiful just totally sick donuts in the mud.

Soon i will balance it out with 33" tires

EDIT: Ok i just re-read your posts from before... 4.10 will be awsome, you can definatly do some sick burnouts with it. And if i were you, get a limited slip for it too =) But you will be running high RPMs on the highway and will loose a little gas milage, but if burnouts are what you want, 4.10 is what you need to get

an LSD would be a good plan if you want to do burnouts. one wheel wonders are a quick way to thrash spider gears

4.10's it will be then :D To answer some other questions right now I have 3.55 gears, its not too bad but not what I'm looking for. The tires and wheels I am getting are 18 inch Cobra R's and the tire size is 255/5.
Thanx for your comments creager and everyone I appreciate them.
Can't wait to get them, like you you said some nice burnouts

if ya really wanna get nasty, weld the spider gears togeather

hahaha, locked axel?
I would think turning would be alittle difficult. ;)

Ha-ha yeah kind of pointless if you truck is ever driven on the street hah

yeah look into the Detroit Truetrac; I just installed one and love it so far. The TrueTrac has no clutches so it doesn’t have any parts to wear out. Unlike Auburn gear (which uses cone clutches) and other limited-slips it doesn’t use Spider gears, but uses their own helix gears or worm gears. It actually works like a full locker when drag (IE brakes) is applied to the mix. In other words, you can power brake and get a full locker effect; defiantly designed for burnouts my friend.

This reminds me of a time I was at an import shop here in charlotte, and a couple of the guys that worked at the shop (who I knew of, personal friends of a friend of mine ) were doing reverse donuts in their Civics, when a Cop rolls up and is like "hey you guys cant be doing that..." So they told the cop they worked there he was like "oh snap!" and does this freegin Nasty ass burnout, making that whole parking lot plus the highway in front of the store a complete whiteout ha-ha. I mean the store stunk like burning rubber for hours.

where did you buy the trutrac from i've been wanting one and no web site that i can find carrys it for first gen explorers. and the ones that do dont carry my specfic axle (dana 35 soon to be 4.56 gears). I have seen ones for the solid dana 35 would this work. or better yet just tell me were you got yours from.

Ok, my truetrac is for the Rear.

You techincally can put a TrueTrac in the Dana35R; our Dana 35 is reverse rotation. Solid Dana 35s are standard Rotation. You would have to swap the side gears in the from the standard-rotation D35 TrueTrac, so techically it would work. But you will run into complications where the axle shafts will start floating more then designed; possibily damaging the carrier and ultimatly the housing, according to Randys ring & pinion.

Look into the dana trac-Lok. I haven't tried it, haha i havent even done the front yet. Come a week or two from now, or however long it takes for me to decided on a carrier ill be gettin to it.

i think the...

"$253.57 TRAC-LOK FACTORY POSI - FOR 3.55 AND NUMERICALLY HIGHER GEAR RATIOS"

is the only Limited slip style posi-traction that is offered for the dana35 reverse... but i might be wrong... i need to research this.

thanks i would apprecaite that

I have a Truetrac in the front D-35, works great. It is hard to steer in hard surfaces.
