I am officially stupid. My rear door was opening fine from the inside but not from the outside. I decided to try fixing it by enabling the child proof lock. Yeah. That's the trick. Now the door didn't open from either outside or inside.
I managed to remove the door panel with the door closed. Then I discovered that the vertical rod from the outside handle was flapping freely. So I removed the door panel on the opposite side to see how it was supposed to connect. Aha! A plastic clip.
I found a broken plastic clip in the bottom of the door. I glued the two halves together so it could accept the threaded vertical rod, but it's still missing the piece that pushes into the square metal hole on the latch assembly. I guess I would need to buy a new latch assembly if I want the outside handle to work. Unless the plastic clip is available separately?
