I am officially stupid. My rear door was opening fine from the inside but not from the outside. I decided to try fixing it by enabling the child proof lock. Yeah. That's the trick. Now the door didn't open from either outside or inside.

I managed to remove the door panel with the door closed. Then I discovered that the vertical rod from the outside handle was flapping freely. So I removed the door panel on the opposite side to see how it was supposed to connect. Aha! A plastic clip.

I found a broken plastic clip in the bottom of the door. I glued the two halves together so it could accept the threaded vertical rod, but it's still missing the piece that pushes into the square metal hole on the latch assembly. I guess I would need to buy a new latch assembly if I want the outside handle to work. Unless the plastic clip is available separately?

Ford door rod clip is what I searched to find that.

Thanks. I found some on Amazon $5 Black Friday sale. Easier than 2 trips to the Ford dealer.

I'm surprised and pleased that these plastic bits are available.

I bought the Dorman replacements at O’Reilly Auto Parts…

They are adjustable too so you can take the slack out of the handles… meaning when you set the rod have the handle already pulling up slightly… remove all slop
This way the doors pop open with the handle instead of people pulling and pulling trying to get it to release
