I’m getting the rear main seal replaced next week in my 98 5.0 XLT. What else should i
get done associated with it?

Transmission mount may need addressing.

Can’t remember the specifics of the torque converter on the 4R70, but if there are any seals associated with it/pump housing, you may want to get at those while it’s all apart.

Thanks I’m taking it to a shop so I don’t have to mess with it as I have limited space and tools. I wonder if they’ll pull the engine or if there’s another way to do it?

They will pull the transmission. For sure it's engine oil leaking?

Yep definitely engine oil. I just changed it so it’s leaking gold. But I think I’m going to put some leak dye in it to be sure first. Im just looking at worst case scenarios so I can be prepared for the financial implications of the rear main seal leak possibility

Using leak dye could be a good thing to diagnose were the engine oil is comming out,
maybe the valve cover gaskets are leaking and oil went down to the bell housing?
If the tranny is out it might be the chance to change the tranny oil pump seal
on high mileage?

Have them drain the converter and transmission

The 5.0 stock converter has a drain

Install a new transmission filter and ne mercon v
Make sure the leak is not coming from the
Valve covers
Dipstick tube

Good time for a new transmission mount as mentioned above
