Blue Steel - I would be interested in the link. I would like to find a rear mounted spare tire hitch for when I go off-road or out of town. My puny 27" spare is a far cry from my 32" tires.
here's one of the sites: Dead Link Removed
even though it says it's for a front receiver hitch, it will fit any 2" receiver hitch. pretty nifty if you ask me. they've also got some winch mounts which look pretty kool for a front receiver hitch. hope that helps.
I just had a great idea (at least I think it is). For all of you who want to mount their spare on the back but don't want to drop a lot of cash on a carrier or interfere with their towing capabilities how about this? Use the hole in the bumper that takes the ball for light duty towing and mount a carrier to this. Simply buy or make something like the carrier here Dead Link Removed and cut off the 'L' that would usually slide into a class three 2" receiver. Weld a flat plat there at the bottom of the post of the carrier instead that has a larger diameter (similar to a tow ball thread) welded perpendicular to the plate. Thread the bolt onto the bumper and there you have a simple, easy tire mount. Am I making sense? If you wanted to get fancy you could buy the kind that swings away to allow the tailgate to open. Simple.
The Hidn Hitch spare tire carrier also can be used with the rear hitch receiver. Because you can't swing it out, it just makes sense though for an occasional use. You're still able to open the flipper glass, just for opening the rear hatch you will need to remove the whole thing, which is fast done, just that's a little tiny bit heavy (screw the gym that evening!!)
If you don't mind looking at a Grand Cherokee (unluckily not mine, very nice rig), here's a link to some pics of that carrier. On those pics, the carrier still sticks out prety far; but it's easy to push it in further and re-drill the hole for the pin.
It wouldn't be too hard to make it pivot. I have a Reese Bike rack for my hitch that does just that. I think I might either order the one from Hidden Hitch and modify it or maybe just build one myself. Here is a link to the Reese rack, I have the 4-bike model on the right.
Has anyone considered using one of those universal prerunner spare tire mounts where it mounts it at an angle. It would take up all the cargo area but it would look pretty cool.

I now ordered the one from Hidden Hitch and I will try to make it pivot. I really liked this bike carrier on the trailerhitch-site that still has a ball mount; exactely what I would need, except in form of tire carrier.
Somebody knows a store, which carries lot's of this stuff? Autozone etc. are very limited, and I hate to order stuff just for finding out, that my "great" idea does not work!! Argh, life would be easier if I would have a welder and my welding skills would be a little bit better....
