Rear tire carrier, State law requires OEM bumper!

I am looking at doing a custom job with a Rodeo or Nissan rear tire carrier. I found out that in Alaska they require OEM bumpers. Now I have seen many people with ARB and Warn bumpers up here, but my sons coach is a State trooper and he verified to me that state law requires the bumpers to be OEM.

Hmmmm. So I will be workng on finding a rear tire carrier and building up the corner pillar to handle the weight.

What do you guys think would work best? Has anyone looked into doing this? What were the problems that came up?

You should find out how much oem bumper is needed. Keep the middle part, and tube out the sides or something....

I'd do this:
Have Cory make you the carrier swingarm and hinge. Buffer the corner of the stock bumper, and install the hinge to metal from that strengthening.

Perry did something like this on the Purple Explorer, I'd ask him about it.

You don't want to attach the tire carrier to the body. It will destroy your X in no time.

On my first X, I used an Aftermarket Tire carrier from a JP wrangler. I'm 90% sure it was Tomkin Machine. I just gusseted the back of the bumper to the frame and drilled some holes where the swing out mounted. I think I still have the tire carrier but it's back in Oregon. I'll be there in July if you want to wait that long. I'll see if I can find a pic or two for you.

Where are you from in Oregon? I was raised in Medford and was going to OIT in K Falls before moving up here to Alaska.


Boyle why will it tear up the body? Can't I re-enforce the body from the inside? If a bronco II can handle it why can't an Explorer if strengthened?

I really don't like the idea of bolting one to the bumper. Heck I'd get one of a trooper and bolt it to the rear hatch first. Of course I would have to get stronger hatch shocks.

I wouldn't put any carrier on the body. The Bronco IIs and Troopers were only designed for a 28" tire. They even wore out and rattled after a few years. The JPs just tear out of the sheetmetal when a larger spare is mounted in the stock location.

What if the previous owner put on the rear aftermarket bumper. Could you get buy that way?

I know that is some cases if you bought it that way, you are ok, but if you customize it, you're screwed.
