So, I took my Mounty to my mechanic to diagnose a whine noise while driving (only made the sound when the accelerator pedal was push) and come to find out the rear diff is going bad so why not regear! Because the rear needs to be handled soon, for the sake of not spending a ton of money all at once, is it safe to regear the rear first and take care of the front diff in a few months if I dont switch it to 4x4? at 3.73 right now, going 4.56 with an OX locker

Second question, how will 4.56 gears do on the freeway towing, nothing more than 3500lbs.

I will have true 33" tires, 5.0 with 4406 tcase

Thanks everyone

Worst case you pull the front drive shaft.

do you have the 4406 in it now? if not you would need to re gear both axles as it is awd, unless you remove the front shaft, which is a bad idea because the truck will not stay put in park, it will roll away without the shaft unless you set the parking brake.

I do have the 4406 in now, so I should be fine

Yes, as long as you don't engage the transfer case!

To get back to the stock 3.73 gearing with 33" tires takes a 4.30 gear.

So using a 4.56 is the equivalent of putting a 3.90 gear in with the stock tire size.

I have the same set up, but I broke the u-joint on the front shaft, so I'm waiting to have a DC unit fabbed up.

I just towed a trailer with a motorcycle from south FL up through the mountains of NC with no issues.

Do the math brother, a stock 235/75 tire at 3.73,
a 33" tire will take a 4.30 gear to give you the same rpm at speed.

A 4.10 will put you at the mathematical equivalent of a 3.55 original gear, while a 4.56 will put you where you would be if you had a 3.90 out of the box.

No feel required.

That is why I went 4.56.

Also, there is already room built in to go 35" later on.
