I’m actually considering replacing the motor and transmission in my 2003 xlt 4x4,
I really just trying to figure out exactly what this would cost if I do the work.
Ok specifics: 4.0 with 5r55w. 230 k on a chassis that has been well maintained for years, by me. Everything works except the transmission. It’s toast. I can get a rebuilt transmission for about $2200 plus $600 core. Not sure about shipping yet. Given how much it would cost to just replace the vehicle and realizing whatever I get used would need some work, maybe just replacing the transmission now with an eye on replacing the motor also at some point would be worth it?
What do you think?

4.0 or 4.6?

That’s around $3500 for a transmission just to get it to your door still need fluids filter and labor…wow

Local reputable trans shop maybe just remanufacture your current trans maybe far cheaper and better warranty if they do the r and r

Unfortunately there are only 2 local shops that I don’t have any faith in. I’ve had other work done by them and just have continued to have problems. One of those shops quoted about $3500-4000 installed
I’m just having a hard time letting go of this vehicle. I’ve done so much to it….

Just considering what sales tax alone on new car would be. At least 2500 thrown away. Something to consider in budget

I would never find rid of it until it just won’t go anymore they don’t
Build them like this anymore and you have a good one

Get the codes pulled at auto parts store
Write down the actual codes and post them here
Do not just “take their word for it” get the actual
Codes

Pulling the codes is worth doing, no doubt.
All I have is a plug in scanner. Not sure how much it will reveal. Pretty much won’t go faster than about 20 mph, so taking it somewhere is not happening. I’ll scan it and see.
I’m leaning towards getting a rebuilt transmission from a reputable online dealer.
$2700 plus $400 core. 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. Includes shipping. Probably do the motor when it gives it up
Not sure, still thinking

I’m at similar point

A dilemma

Trans rebuilt for $2500 in 2019 is slipping now

DORF head gasket leak, now going into oil
Timing chain death wish

Engine rebuild in& out is $$$$$7000

Trans has to be more than the 2019 price and local shop woes

And other than the too typical luFord rocker rust, looks better than new
