I didn't actually put them in, everything is just sitting in place so thats why it may look a little odd.. I didn't even plug the wire back when I put it in there... they actually block a good connection which is why I removed them. They came from the 4 closest to the firewall on each side.

I don't think my '99 had those. Jon/Eric,am I mistaken?

Did you have the same exhaust manifold style, perhaps that's the difference/need for them?

I have TMH. Reason I'm asking Jon (Turdle) and Eric (techieman) is they tore it apart last summer and put in my headers for me. :)

I know, what I'm asking is.. did your stock manifolds look like mine, or were they the more refined pipe looking ones? You probably don't remember or didn't bother to look since it didn't matter much [TMH anyways in the end =D] Maybe they'll know. As for everyone else, since removal so far I haven't noticed anything melted. If anything... Could always have them cut in half and installed on all of them... you get the protection and the spark plug boot will properly snap into place. [Just an idea floating in my head]

On another note, some of you may notice my last one in the picture of them removed is pretty bent n beat up. It was the one that was most difficult to remove so it was a fight and things got a lil messy. Nothing bad happened to it by the engine's doing.

In my experience, the '99+ 5.0 Explorers have the cast manifolds without the "tube" boot protectors. Both of my '98s had the leak prone tubular manifolds with the boot protectors, but my '01 5.0, as I mentioned above, has cast manifolds and the heat shields are built onto the plug wire boots.

I had the protectors on the wires (I no longer use OEM). Now I understand why I always read about two different versions of Motorcraft wires for the 5.0.

Dan pretty much hit the nail on the head... do what he said.

Sparky, have you done it and noticed any wire/boot issues?

Seafoam good?

I am changing my plug wires tomorrow and thought i would stop by for the usual insight. What i found was Seafoam. I understand from this thread that it will get the uglies out of my engine but does it hurt the engine at all? I have 150,000 good miles on my 98 mounty and I'm afraid to kill it.

Cool, thanks. Do you have any recommendations for which spark plugs to buy?

Also does anyone know on which specific motorcraft wires to buy?

The best plugs hands down are the
NGK iridium ix's part# Tr55ix gap .054in
