Has anyone ever tried to make a dual air intake setup using a waste valve from an RV? You know, the things you pull to let your poop go...

I have always avoided the snorkel due to it's restrictive nature on airflow into the engine. I am sure there would be a way to run one inline that you could close and have your snorkel be the only source of air but when you were just running down a trail you could have it open and your rig could breath. I am going to look into this and see if I can make it work. Having the snorkel as a selectable option for that once in while water hole while not having to sacrifice air flow all the time would be sweet...

Sounds like a good idea. The snorkels are usually built with plumbing parts already, so what's one more:D Just be sure to get the black water valve and not the gray water. It's larger diameter, at least on mine.

Ya, I figured I'd just wander through the RV parts store and see what I could come up with. Pics when I get around to it. The snorkle will come eventually...

This is a great idea and I too have wondered why not more folks try this. Searching for hours resulted in one post.

I'm thinking of doing this with one inlet for the snorkle, this would for off-road and another setup with some sort of Ram Air set up for DDriving and hiway use. There is plenty room under the hood to do both. I'll create a new thread post when I do it.

You might need 2 valves-- one to close the other intake when you open the snorkle.

Yes, you are correct. I wasn't clear about that, though that was my intention.

Snorkles are an interesting subject here. I'm surprised at how many times it comes up in a search thread and yet there are not many ways of doing it. I guess there are only so many ways to skin a cat, as the cliche goes!

Thinking on it, I would think you could do it with just one valve. Put it on the ram side or the side for the DD intake. Just close it off when the need comes up and open the rest of the time and just leave the snorkel open all the time as the extra air form it would not hurt any thing at all fact may even help a bit who knows.
If the valve was set up right it could be operated manually from inside by a cable pull kind of like a lawn mower throttle cable set up or an old auto choke pull set up.

an Idea would be doing air intake from say the space between the inner and outer fenders with the valve on it and then the snorkel tied to it with a Y adapter so that the inner fender intake was one branch with the vale on it and the other branch to the Snorkel this way you would have only one feed into the air box. A pull or push on the cable would select air from snorkel only or from both. As I said just a thought may even do something like this my self some day but other things have priority first.

Yes, no doubt there a FAR bigger priorities, but I love the idea.

Not a bad idea. I thought of a similar one, with 1 valve initially too.

1 valve could certainly work, but if implemented so that the ram air portion is valved off, then the "ram-air" effect is minimized as any extra pressure is reduced due to the snorkle. I have played around with this during the summer and there is a little bit of power improvement, but it is very slight on a mostly stock motor. Even with a much more stout build, I don't think there is a whole lot to gain, but 5 or 10 ponies here and there do add up. That said, I don't go 70mph or better on the roads anyway, and the faster you go the better the gains with ram-air.

I don't care for the industrial, ARB look of most snorkles and am looking for something more subdued, yet functional. I had a wild thought of adding some piping to a roof top scoop with dual intake piping along the A-piller, on both the driver and passenger sides going through the fender as most have done. Inside the engine compartment would be a cone filter in a box. All the valves could be placed there. Since I have manual locking hubs, If I go bouncing about, I have to get out anyway, so messing under the hood is no big deal. The ram-air inlet could be located below the grill. I have an engine oil cooler there so I would possibly mount an intake hose just below the bumper.

I really should focus my energies on getting the vortech SC details worked out. Since the kit isn't available anymore I have to piece one together and make a mount for the v-3. That setup eats all of the available space in the engine compartment!

You would have to mount the maf before the split though. It would be pretty sweet though.

You mean downstream of the split, right?

Yeah, it is a fun idea, right along with cowl induction hoods and rear spare tire swing carriers. Of course lifts, bigger tires, better drive trains and hotter engines are fun too!

haha, if only time and money were the issues....
