2011 Explorer Limited
Recently obtained a 2011 Explorer Limited. I was told the owne took it to the dealer who stated the radio was dead. This one had Navigation. Nothing responds.

Can I just stick in a 2din radio? Would I lose anything dong this? F I must go stock, can I buy any 2011 radio off eBay and install it without going to a dealer for programming to the vin?

Thank you

Do you have anything showing on the screen or is it blank? I'm just trying to figure out if the real issue may be the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module). The APIM is the 'brains' of the FordMy Touch system which controls the functions on the touchpad below the screen.

Nothing shows of the screen ever. It is like it never gets power or tries to boot up

I think that the problem is a bad APIM but I'm not a mechanic. Just going by previous posts about a blank/black screen. Have you taken it to a Ford dealer to have it diagnosed?

BTW, before doing anything else, have you checked for blown fuses? Your Owner's Manual has a list of them and what they control.

Thanks. No, I haven’t. $150 diagnosis fee and 2+ hours of my life is too steep for me. Prior owner did, but I do not know exactly what they were told was dead. Anyone have the wiring info coming out of the APIM? I mean, I should be able to test some basics like figure out if it is sending power to the radio. I figure I can send 12v to the screen separately to see if I can tell if it is booting. The APIM should generate some heat that an infrared thermometer can detect, I believe.

But can I just throw another 2 din unit in and connect it to the APIM? It sounds like it is this kind of design with Ford, from your description.

I assume a different APIM would need reprogrammed for the vin and features. Right?

Yes, I believe a replacement APIM requires programming to the vehicle in which it's installed. I believe the radio has it's own fuse. It can be turned ON with the vehicle turned OFF. Check fuse #29 in the cabin fuse box.

It should be the same as the SYNC 1 entry. The APIM pinouts haven't changed much over the years.

If your APIM is dead, I have an extra Sync 2 APIM out of a 2013 Explorer. You can have it for the price of shipping, I'll even program it for your VIN.
