Hi. I am trying to get this service engine soon light off on my truck. I had a full-blown tune-up, etc at 80K miles (i'm at about 88K now) and I'm quite confident it is fine- (and it runs fine).

Do I need a computer to test the car before the light will go off? Or is this light on (just like the other lights such as door ajar when the door isn't ajar) for a legitimate reason? I find it hard to imagine then during the entire life of the car this light has never gone on and about 4K miles after I get a full tune-up, new plugs, etc that it goes off...

Thanks for all advice.

p.s on another note is a fuel-filter a pretty easy thing to replace for an "advanced novice" such as myself? I can do oil changes/air filter, etc, etc but never done a fuel filter..

You need to have it scanned. Just because you had it serviced at 80k does not mean that everything is OK. There could be a sensor of some kind that has or is going bad.

The Service Engine Light used to be called Check Engine Light so service engine soon could be alot of things.

Is scanned have something to do with the dealer jacking into my Explorer?

Thanks

Any OBDII reader should be able to read it..

You can get a basic OBDII reader for about $40. I got mine at Harbor Freight but I bet most auto parts stores have 'em. It'll have a code book with it so you can make note of what the problem is; if the light comes back on you'll want to tell your mechanic what codes you had. The reader will also clear the code so the Service Engine light will go away (until problem re-appears, that is :) )

I've got $5 on o2 Sensor, especially with 88k on it.
