Just picked up a 2000 V8 awd mounty. Feels tight. Zero rust. I was wondering if anyone knew about any shocks cross referencing from other vehicles? I have a set of 5100 bilsteins off an 04 Jeep TJ. Factory height. I haven't had time to pull one and chech the collapsed/extended lengths. It looks like the rears may be swappable? Trying to ball on a budget and have been checking FB Marketplace. But not many of these 2 gen parts floating around anymore.

Shocks are cheap

Have had good luck with Gabriel or Monroe often get these on closeout
Many v8 trucks had air ride suspension in the back and sometimes all 4 corners
They are expensive to replace so many people will just delete them

There is an extended travel shock available for the front and there are some “load handling” shocks for the rear the come with a helper spring.. if your old leaf springs have sagged these can help

I mean.. cheap shocks are cheap. But nothing is cheap anymore. I was seeing if anything newer like pull off fox/bilsteins etc. From newer f150, jeep JK etc were of a similar length that could be used that people ditched for new suspension lifts I didn't wanna sink 4 to 500 in shocks when I plan on bigger suspension stuff later. LOTS of new/lightly used coilover setups off 4runners, f150s, etc.. On marketplace. That I'd rather have up front. Not a fan torsion bars.

No air suspension on this thing. But the rear has links thar help locate the axles with the leafs, and a horizontal mounted shock to help with side to side or leaf hop I'm guessing? My first 1998 mountainer didn't have that. So that's neat. But I also can't find any of those links or that shock on rockauto at all? Which is odd.

I have factory 6.2 raptor front coilovers and the rear shocks but they all need a rebuild. I did read the front of the exs/mountys can't fit a 2.5" shock setup. Only a 2.0

8” stroke 2” body coilover up front to delete the torsion bars brackets and re enforcements are needed as well as spring to suit your build. I have converted a couple of trucks to coilovers with mixed results.

Yes the v8 explorers have rear traction bars from factory
All gen ii 4 door explorers have the 3rd shock on the rear differential

I just remove the third shock never missed it

Finding some good used coilovers can be great but hard to save $$$ when you still gotta replace their uniballs and potentially change the coils. Plenty of how to threads form ditching t bars for coilovers up front. I’m no fan of torsion bars either but have gotten good at keeping them by replacing them with lower mile units and replace the wear pads when they get thin. V6 Rangers had the t bars until 2011

A set of ORI'S would solve all the problems.. Lol

I figure any 2.0 coil overs off a 4runner, tacoma f150 or will work and the spring rate will be close enough. I was on a scale yesterday and it weighed 4600lbs flat.

It's still odd that rockauto doesn't list or show those traction bars or that little shock.

I tig weld and build jeeps, beefing up/fabbing a mount for the top of the coil won't be difficult.

Our trucks are 25 years old plus there are tons of parts that are not avail anymore explorers I use 750-850 lb springs in the coilover, ranger more 600-700 psi
The lower shock mount must have a 2-3” stand on it to clear the cv axle
The upper mount needs an adapter or tabs welded in… or better yet just hack the whole stock shock tower off and run all new…. It needs re enforced anyways and then with the adapter for the top mount… well sometimes it’s just easier to set in your own coilover tower
The upper control arm tabs also need some re enforcing

The 07 ranger I built used a custom duel coilover tower and along with superlift drop brackets and knuckles I was able to run 10” stroke remote resi coilover and a smooth body next to it, king sent them with a tender coil setup that is progressive, it worked out pretty well with the mid travel kit
