The guy that installs mufflers in town is a client of mine and I trust him. He suggested that I put a Flowmaster Delta 40 on my 02 Explorer over the 50, but says the 50 would be fine too. He says that he's done a lot of 40's on SUV's. The Ford has 4 Cat's in it, and therefore isn't as loud as say a Tahoe with a 40 on it. He's getting me one at cost and putting it on for $100 total! Pretty sweet. But should I get a 50 or a 40? It's not too late for me to change my mind.

A buddy of mine said he would get a Magnaflow instead, because of how it's chambered. And since I sometimes tow a trailer 400+ miles each way, that the Flowmaster might be too loud inside the cabin.

Given this info, what do you guys think?? Thanks!
Jason

hajimemashite jpoprock, genki des!?

$100 is a great deal!! But I'm probably the only one thats going to say this so ... in my opinion, save your $$ :D hehe.

Here's an idea: spend it on some TommyHeavenly CDs :D

I know I was really disappointed with my 40s. I later ended up cutting the front cats off, emptying the rear ones, and running glorified cherry bombs, but I freaking love the way it sounds now.

Hmmm... my Explorer looks really awesome. Black with the Chrome wheel option, tinted windows, etc. So, I though that adding a decent "growl" would be cool. But I dont' want a dragster. And I don't want the cabin to be loud as hell when towing on rare occasion. Should I simply NOT do it? Or get a different type of muffler?
Thanks,
jason

My Explorer is black with tinted windows and the chrome rims. It looks great! I thought that by adding a slight growly muffler would make it just so cool. But maybe it's a mistake? keep in mind, I'm just doing normal street driving. Nothing hot-roddy. So, maybe it won't be as loud for me? Or am I making a huge mistake? Should I look at a Dynaflow instead?

Sorry for the dual post! my browser hung and I didn't think the first one took!

I'd say go for the 50's if you don't want it to be to loud, it'll give your exhaust a nice growl but it won't be real loud in the cab. I can hear my 50 series if the music is off but as soon as I turn on the music I can't hear it anymore unless I really get on it, I only have the stock stereo by the way.

If you want a muffler that performs well and sounds nice when you step on it, consider a Flowmaster 70.

I have used the 50 and it is loud and obnoxious in the cabin. The 70 is hardly noticeable until you get on it.

Al's correct... I have a 70 series dumped behind my axle on my 4.0 SOHC sport
with 3" pipe from the muffler and its pretty quiet until you get down on it. If you want a nice quite sound try will sound even better on a V8:D
the 70 series

i have a flowmaster 40 delta myself... not too shabby... fairly loud but its a good rumble... heres a sound clip

I decided to get the 50 series SUV Performance muffler and it really isn't loud at all in the cabin, unless you're really **** about sound. Of course you can hear it, but it's not bad at all. I could probably get a sound clip if you really want one. I've got the 4.0L fyi

Go with the 50 series. I have the 40 and enjoy it, the wife......not so much

I just put a flowmaster on my 2002 Limited V8 last night. I don't know what series it is, but it's a single 3 inch in and dual 2 1/2 out with dumps. I cut one cat out and ran a 3 inch pipe to the muffler. It is frickin loud. I am actually not happy. Didn't expect it to be so loud, just wanted to add a little more rumble. I am going to have a muffler shop put in a different muffler and run it out the back. I honestly wish I didn't even bother with it. It's nice to be able to talk to people when you are driving and the loudness is annoying on long car drives.

I bet if you cut the last cat off and put a pipe in place, it should make it sound a little better and not be so dang loud. Good luck!

I have been this route also--
The flowmaster was a big di$$apointment.

Was it too loud or quiet for you? I hated my twin 40s waaaayyyyy to quiet for me.

Way too loud--for a road vehicle. Louder than it needs to be for sure--

I think I'm down to the Flowmaster 50 SUV or the Flowmaster 70. I don't want a real loud cabin, and I tow a 3000lb trailer 4 hrs each way every whip stitch with a car full of people. Sounds like the 70 is the best bet no? My vehicle is a family type car sometimes, not a hot rod. I just want a bit of throaty idle or low speed growl that's all.

50 and 70 are good choices for a nice idle tone, better gas mileage, more horsepower, and a still quiet cabin... i have a 40 delta and its fairrly loud inside cuz the muffler is basically a straight-thru with a triangle shape (delta)... the 50 and 70 have much more baffles and maintain horsepower while keeping noise level at a balance

I'm happy with my 5.0 and glasspacks.

I don't like 99% of the aftermarket exhausts I hear on V6s. I recall one 4.0ohv '96 Explorer on a car lot one time that had a good sounding exhaust. I'm not sure what the muffler was, but the tip was Magnaflow... I assume the muffler was probably a Magnaflow unit as well. It had a great deep tone.

Honestly though, if I had a V6 Explorer, I wouldn't waste my time with exhaust unless:

A) I just HAD to have another 1mpg
B) My old exhaust was shot
C) I had a ton of other performance modifications that warranted a new exhaust system

Maybe D) if I knew for 100% sure what system was on the 4.0ohv mentioned above

For me, its too much of a gamble to experiment with exhausts that are 99% likely to disappoint me.
