I have a 1991 explorer with the 3.55's in the diff's. will that pull 31's ok or should i regear? if i ever put anything bigger than 31's, 32's would def. be max. is it worth the money? thanks

you should be alright with 31s, but its just going to put some strain on the drive train. if you have a junkyard near by, go and see if they have any Xs with 3.73, i swaped 3.73s for my 3.27s and its a world of difference, and i'm putting 31s on mine soon. its also extremely cheap if you go the junkyard route i think it cost me like $100 total

its not needed but it would be nice. someone on here had 35s and 3.55s and no problems.

i have 31's with 3.08s! HELL YEAH!

nah really i hate it so much im goin 4.10 as soon as i get my whole axle rebuild **** together like locker and what not

i dont think there is a junkyard nearby that i can go walk though. i just want to do a 3 in body lift and some shackles in the back and def. replace the shocks for better ones and i figure i'm set. The X is mainly gonna be for every now and then wheelin around the property and powerline trails and such. I have a 96 accord ex so the explorer wont be my primary car. i sold my 1990 4runner awhile back and i miss it so much. that thing stock had a ton of clearnce with just 31's. you could fit 32's stock with little rubbing. it was awsome. anwyays my dads got a 91 explorer so i figured that would be my next project. thanks for replying everyone....

also if anyone knows anyone that is upgrading to 4.10's or 4.56's or such and want to get ride of their old gears let me know. thanks

Kevin

yet... That person just put the 35s on so.

I would consider 4.10s if you're thinking of going with 32 someday. You don't want to have to do it more than once. Also if some explorers came stock with 4.10 and the little 235/75s or 255/70s then it should be good for 31s or 32s IMO. I would rather have more gearing than not enough.

3.55's work But you did not say which Trans you are running I have friends with manual trans that can't use 5 OD but they are happy using 4 th.. I would go with 4:11's min.. Thats what I had with 33's not quite enough. though. My Son can't learn Larger Tires Stress every thing else. Spider Gears, Axles, Drive Shafts and Transmissions. A lower gear set will reduce some of the strain except on the Axles. but that is a improvement... my 2 cents..

33s = 4.10 and up...man law

its an auto if that helps. i'm still undecided on the ratio but i'm thinkin 4.10's

With 31's you'll be borderline ok with 3.55's. If you're planning on going 33's, go directly to 4.56's...don't even stop at 4.10's...I'm on 33's with 4.56's and my rpm's are just about right.

I have 32s with 3.55s and its not a speed demon but it's definitely drivable.
