Signal Mirror LED's

scrogathon, please note that the wiring in Bob's post many diiffer from your 97. Ford changed alot of the wiring colors from model year 98 to 2001. Model years 95-97 are the same.

This is from the 97 service guide. Sorry that picture is huge, If I size it down it would be kind of hard to read.

Didnt check but I think the colors are the same.

Hope this helps. We are waiting to see what those look like.

Allright here is a small update on the mirror leds, I have finally gotten around to taking my mirrors off the truck, first I had to remove the door panel and then the mirror, and then heat the mirror up to get it off the housing, I also had to slide a blade behind the mirror to remove some glue that seemed to be heat proof as I have heated mirrors.

Anyways I have Installed the leds on the Drivers side and am going to do the wiring this afternoon( the fun part is gonna be getting the wiring to where I need it). I will post up the video hopefully tonight of at least the drivers side completed. Wish me luck I am going to need it I think.

Bump for an update! :salute:

Sorry everyone... my wifes father passed away three weeks ago and I had to leave the country. However, I just finished the Signal Mirrors and you can see them on pages 8-9 of my cardomain site. I just finished my drivers side mirror on Saturday when A F'ing motorcycle cut between me and another car and took out my mirror. The backing plate is history so I had to order a whole new mirror. It should be here by Friday at the latest. For those of you who have a 2002 or newer Explorer or Ranger this job will be much easier but you will need to cut out a hole for the LEDs to fit into the passangers side. Drivers side is a piece of cake. For those with 1995 to 2001 be careful you do not break the the center ball mount on the backing plate. It breaks easily. The wires you are looking for to connect the turn signals too for drivers side is Green with Orange stripe and passangers is Orange with Blue stripe (1995 to 2001). 2002 Explorer and up is drivers Green W/ white stripe and Passangers White W/Blue stripe.

Rick, sorry to hear of your loss. The mirrors look great! Sounds like you have the same luck as me. Damn motorcycles!! I've got to check out those mirrors from www.Hillbankmotorsports.com Thanks for the update. :salute:

I just want to add that you can check out this guys Ranger page as he has a lot of info for installing some nice Signal Mirrors from a company called Hillbankmotorsports.com for only $40.00. These are just like the Muths. Here's the link http://www.fordrangerforum.com/how-...d-thunderbolt-turn-signal-mirror-install.html They would be a direct fit for 2002 and newer Explorers.

Rick, since I have a '02 XLT, I just ordered the signal mirror kit for the 01-05 ranger from http://www.hillbankmotorsports.com/...1-2-3/signal-mirror-kit-2001-2005-ranger.html
I will keep you posted on how the install goes! :salute:

Thanks Rondo, can't wait to see them. I think it will be a much easier than the ones I did. Muth has some really good install instuctions on their website. Check here http://www.muthco.com/epapers/21000790.pdf

Downloaded the instructions. I will let you know how I make out on the install. I'm expecting to receive the kit by this weekend. :salute:

Received the kit yesterday. Going to be doing the install tonight. Thanks again Rick for the tip.:thumbsup: I will post a review of the install and final product upon completion. Wish me luck!! :salute:

Hey Rick, since you already disassembled the mirrors, I'm guessing on an '02, are the instructions from Muth's website accurate? Thanks.

First roadblock encountered: Passenger side mirror is an after-market unit so my new signal mirrors won't work on this side. If it wasn't for bad luck..........

Project currently on hold until I can get an OEM passenger side mirror. So much for spending only $40 for signal mirrors. I will post when the project restarts.

Rondo, don't buy a new one. Go too http://www.car-part.com/ and find one that fits you're explorer. I did a search and found a lot of them for around $30.00 to $50.00. I found an OEM one for at the salavage yard for $25.00. Good luck.

Rick, thanks for the www.car-part.com tip. I went to the local junk yards today and found that the mirror is going for $65.00. Car-part.com lists the junk yards that I went to, still $65. It's kind of frustrating, you know. I thought I was going to get the signal mirrors for $40 just to discover that the previous owner has screwed me again. I really would like to have the signal mirrors. Have been unemployed since January and $40 was something I could swing. I'm debating selling the signal mirror kit and cutting my losses vs. spending another $65 that I don't have to see the dream to it's fruition. This is just like the motorcycle luck.........................:salute:

Getting ready to go ahead with the install of the Hillbank Motorsports Signal Mirrors. Anyone have any last minute advice? :dunno: I have an '02 XLT, the turn signal wiring diagram would be nice, lol. :p:

So BigRondo, did you get a new mirror for the aftermarket one you had? I think the diagram Bill Kemp gave will work for you. Or, you can click this link for a detailed install. http://www.muthco.com/epapers/21000790.pdf . Can't wait to see them installed.

I did get an OEM mirror to replace the aftermarket one. I have not installed the signal mirrors yet. I have a question about a little wire-like piece that is on the OEM mirrors and not on the ones in the signal kit. I will take pics and post them up to get ideas on whether I need to transfer them to the new mirror pieces or not.

Do you mean the diagram from BobWiersema? I didn't see a diagram from Bill Kemp.

I would like to tap into the turn signal wires inside the cabin if I can, but if I have to run wires into the engine compartment and tap into the turn signals at the turn signals themselves I will.

EDIT: Here is the pic of the wire-like piece. What purpose does it serve? Do you think I should move the wire to the signal mirror?

Just install the wire to the new signal mirror. It limit's how far the glass can move. Look up the wire diagram from MUTHS, for 2002-2005 Explorer/Ranger. I listed the URL on my last post.

OK, I think I have all the information I need to go forward with this project. I will be starting (and hopefully finishing) today. I will post up pics/video when I am done!

Signal Mirrors installed and work awesome. Write-up with pics and video soon to come!!!
