What are some common reasons for a slipping tranny? I hope and pray that I don't have to get it rebuilt. After being in gear for a while, it doesn't slip. Also, it takes a second or two to go into gear. Any ideas? Thanks guys!

Do you have a stick or auto?

Some people confuse a clutch that needs to be tightened for a slipping tranny in a manual configuaration.

Auto right? Check your fluid....If it is getting low, the tranny will hesitate to go into gear at first, start to slip, and eventually not move at all.

Not the Fluid

I think that the tranny may have some problems getting the gears lubed up. It only slips at the very beginning of my ride. Also, it takes a second or two to go into gear. Are there any good sites or books that could help me pin point the prob? Thanks for all the help.

On my '89 BII mine was slipping like all hell, but only when i first started it up, so my dad took it back down to the shop and under the tranny pan is a filter that has 2 O-rings on it, well there werent any on mine, when he got them on, it didn't do it AT ALL, maybe you need to replace some O-rings?

well Im sitting on the 3rd tranny thats been in my X, and the tranny screwed up again yesterday.. The automatic's that came in the X had a real bad problem with the front seal blowing out, and leaking trans. fluid all over everything.. Thats what happened to mine yesterday. luckily the tranny is only 4 months old and its still under warranty. apparantly Ford had the same problem with the windstars. they made a new style of seal for the Windstar, but not the Xploder. (it cost me 1280.00 to rebuild the tranny, and get a new torque converter.

Now that I think about it, I didn't replace those o rings when I changed my fluid. Although, my tranny is slipping all the time now. Could it still be that problem or not? Let me know PLEASE!!! You may save me well over a thousand!

My 91's tranny is slipping badly too... The fluid is full, so theres no reason other then mechanical for it to be doing that... My OD doesnt even work anymore! One time I spent 1/2 hour trying to get Drive to engage (Didnt have much choice unless I didnt want to make it home)... It seems to not be so bad anymore, but OD still doenst work and sometimes the truck drives funny... Im sure Ill end up spending $1000 getting the damn tranny rebuilt... Back to my search for the cause of the problem :D

did you check your vacum lines for the modulator. it may be time to get a new modulator valve. they only cost about $20-25, so it's not bad. its sucks to put them in though, get that done by a pro. my '91 XLT needed a new modulator, but now the overdrive isn't working anyway, but I think it's time to rebuild 'cause it's too old. for sure check the modulator though
