Take the vehicle back to whoever installed the engine ASAP. It sounds like one of the fuel lines is not porperly installed/sealed. It may not be leaking enough to appear on the ground, but ANY raw fuel smell can be potentially dangerous!

I agree, if you had the engine replaced and thats when the smell started, have them fix it, test for leaks.

If it is not due to the engine installation then it could be a canister purge or canister vent solenoid, which are part of the fuel system emissions. Also things they would have had to hook up during the engine install, but deal with vapors rather then feeding the engine fuel.

I once had a gas smell issue and finally found it to be caused by a pin hole sized leak in the fuel rail near the FP test port.

Good luck ......

thanks guys for advice unfortunitly the place i am dealing with is the place i bought it from and they are crooks so i will use all of this advice i can get and try that im interested in the canister purge by researching on here sounds like it might be the trick i will keep it posted and anyone else please put in the input thanks

gas smell driving me crazy

i want to replace the purge canister or the relays but cant find canister gas smell is on drivers side not sure where too look 99 sohc 4.0

It's above where the spare tires goes. Under the truck.

the canister itself is mounted above the spare tire as stated.
However the canister purge valve is mounted up under the battery, under the hood.
the canister VENT solenoid is mounted witht he charcoal canister back by the spare tire.

Before you replace anything (called throwing $$$ at it) I would do a visual inspection of all the connections, especially up around the engine, since they replaced your engine.
My guess is they either broken one of the plastic fittings on the end of a vapor hose, or just simply forgot to hook it all back up.

well it was the fuel rail apparently when they swapped parts they tighten down the fuel raill two tight and cracked the back bracket causing the rail to be loose on the rear injectore squirting out

then they should fix it or you can replace the fuel rail, it is not too difficult of a job.

Glad you found your leak source!

yea i replaced it already the old one was plastic now they are making them metal its nice
