I've got a 98 4.0 SOHC, having the following problems. Truck is not starting on cold starts all the time. Turns over, has a slight "hiss" sound coming from plastic intake manifold. After 3 or 4 times, the vehicle starts. Sounds like its not getting fuel. It has also started to die while at highway speeds. Has done this 3 times in the last 3 days. Have cleaned the MAF. Intake gaskets have been replace 3 times. No check engine light. I'm stumped.

Also, ABS light comes on intermittenly, turn off and restart and it goes away.

I appreciate all suggestions on the above.

Well they say its the fuel pump, any comments?

That almost sounds like a vacuum leak of some sort, or a leaking gasket. Here's a quick test. Once it's running, take a can of wd-40 and spray around the areas that you hear the hissing. If you have a leak, the wd-40 will get into the system and you will notice the engine change it's idle.

Plastic intake manifold must go!!!!!!

Have a 97 xlt sohc. Same prob. due to warped plastic intake manifold. Recall item I think at least on the 97s

Typical USA quality is Job 1 POS - Go figure plastic intake manifold, what were they thinking?
