- 2014 Explorer XLT
This thread was way to long to go through, but I didn't see a resolution.
Explorer's Poor Headlights
2011-2014 Explorer Problem: It's like there are black discs covering the beams with the only light being in the ditch to the right just in front of the car, extending way up into the trees on high beams. There is a little light right in front of the car but it's really, really hard to see.
If your car doesn't do this then you are lucky and can't understand why people complain about explorer headlights so please don't comment.
No, there is no amount of adjustment that will fix this.
The issue is that it is possible to install the bulbs in a way that the two big tabs and one small tab are in the wrong groove. The filament of the 9005 bulb is off center and when it is clocked incorrectly the beam pattern sucks as described above.
I had replaced the bulbs in my wife's explorer before a seven hour drive at night. A miserable seven hour night drive with zero visibility, braking on the highway because the road disappears around a turn. Before driving home I looked at the bulbs and sure enough they were installed incorrectly. I reinstalled and the drive home was much better. Explorer lights still suck but not dangerously when the bulbs are correct.
Good luck! I hope this helps.
