I bought this thing for $900. There's hoses disconnected, a vinyl shower hose with a bolt jammed in the end of it where I THINK the evap service port goes, radiator is missing top two bolts, a hose disconnected from the radiator that I can't for the life of me figure out where it goes, a severe misfire (most likely because of the afformentioned shower hose/bolt), no thermostat, a snapped off dipstick (already replaced), the spark plugs looked like they hadn't been changed since it rolled off the assembly line, completely rounded off oil drain plug, and a coolant leak (That might have been my fault. When I went to flush the coolant system, the drain petcock had been snapped off, so I had to disconnect the bottom radiator hose and I think I just poked a hole in it by accident. The best part? Check engine light still hasn't come on. I'm gonna do what I can to try and right the atrocities done to this poor thing, I just might need some advice, which is why I'm here. Will post pictures under the hood tomorrow

I'm not sure how we can best help, but you might browse through my 99 build thread. I have a lot of pictures there, most with the body off or easier to tell what parts are there and where they go. My 99 is a SOHC 4.0 and I had to reconstruct it, I used my old 93's rear clip. That thread is the 99/93 link in my signature below;

If you want this Project, it can be done. You are in the right place, with experts like CDW6212R. Just start the projects one at a time. Keep in mind that this will probably not be your most economical form of transportation, but instead could be a learning experience and a challenge.

Good Luck!

p.s. Your Check Engine Light bulb is probably burnt out, or has been removed.

Hope you’re near a good pick n pull style junkyard...great way to get cheap parts

Ditto, I have one 98 Explorer that I know the check engine light should be on, it's never worked. These trucks need a lot of work now due to prior owners, not because they are poor vehicles. Just get started and clean things up, replace the fluids and filters etc.Along the way you will discover new things, and learn what the vehicle needs.
