I wish that I had found this forum before buying an explorer!! I would never have bought one!!
I bought a used 98 model and its spent more time in the workshop than on the road. The remote door locks failed and the timming chain what joy!
I've got it back now only to be embarrased by a friend in a Nissan Patrol when going off road. I get stuck where he has no problems.
So I'm off to buy a reliable Japanese 4x4 that is capable of going off road without getting stuck or falling to bits!!:thumbdwn::(
I suppose there is a reason that people only use toyota and nissan in the outback ford exploders just can't cope?

Dude, if you just gonna come here to bash the exs, go to hell. You got a lemon, there are lemon japs too. surprise. Dont be and ass to us for your misfortune. Hope you Japs better!

yea im pretty sure u got stuck not bc of ur truck but bc u dont no how to offroad!!

and im also sure that most the x's on here can out perform ur buddy and most if not all jap trucks!

Proof that ignorance apparently is bliss, well have fun with your next vehicle lets you sit. maybe you can sign onto thier forum and bad mouth them as well.

wow big red pig has some balls to come into the forum and bash our beloved Explorers on his second post too!

Actually all you gotta do is look in the mirror.
Before I buy a vehicle I research it, because thats alot of $$$ to spend.

So if you took 10 minutes to research the 98 Explorer with the SOHC, you may have checked out the 98 you bought before hand and saved yourself the heart ache of buying a lemon.

Lemons come from Nissan and Toyota too, believe me there are plenty of 98 Toyota's out there spending plenty of time and $$$ in the shop for their owners.

If you buy a house thats falling apart do you blame the house?

Welcome to the forum, (even though you won't be here for long)

Hi everyone!
I apologise for any upset I may have caused with my last thread.
However I was just stating basic facts.
My intension was not to disgrace the explorer as a basic package.
Yes I have had problems with my explorer and yes its off road capabilities are quite limited.
However I still like driving the explorer but I just don't trust it!
When going off road in the Australian bush I really need a vehicle I can trust!!
After reading the info on this site it is obvious that the explorer is a very popular vehicle. Unfortunately for me it is just too fragile and problematic.
The Australian market is also poorly set up for the explorer which does not help.
I hope this goes some way to explaining my other thread.
However for those who question my driving experience and ability 'you do not know me' so you cannot comment.
I am an ex british special forces soldier with a lot of off road driving experience in extreme situations and locations so please do not comment on subjects of which you do not have all the facts.
Finally I would once again like to apologise for the upset.;)

How did you get stuck?

I had a '91 Toyota Pup and I spent double what I paid for it trying to fix it.

I paid $3800 for my '01 X, and have spent exactly $400 to date on parts that needed replacing, most of which were necessary changes on all cars (brake pads, etc.)

As much as I loved my Toyota, it was a lemon like no other.

There you go for your Jap > Ford-ness there bud.

Its quite strange that you keep refering to my explorer as a lemon because I have had problems with the chains etc.
Everyone has problems with the chains and the gearbox therefore ford must have a massive lemon tree for a factory?
The reason for getting stuck (and I thank you for your concern) is that as a standard vehicle there is no real ground clearance. So with a little re-negotiation I got through some of the difficult sections.
However my friend in his patrol just went straight over no problems.
With regards to the Aussie market the explorer had suspension mods to cope better with the outback. (99 not mine)
I'm not trying to disrespect the explorer I was just stating some home truths!
I will be increasing the ground clearance with shackles etc but I still have every intention in selling and going for a jap truck because they are the wiser choice in the Australian market.
I'll have to make sure not to say anything else thats a little contraversal.
I'm british so I don't quite understand the emotions that a vehicle can create!
I like fords on the whole my first car was a ford and I've had a total of 6 thats one reason I bought the explorer!!:salute:
I still like the old girl!!!
We got the chains done on warrenty and as a family we use the explorer more than the other cars and if I lived in the US I'd probably keep it because there seams to be a good service market for them over there.
Over here it is very limited I even had to get extended shakles made up myself.
Happy trucking and I won't say anything else!

To the whiney@#!% crybaby

Did you bother to have it checked out before you bought it?Probably not, judging by your attitude, you didnt think you needed to,because nobody would dare screw you, right?Caveat emptor!Jap stuff breaks too! :us:GOD BLESS AMERICA:us:

actually that's not true, there are many explorer that have no problems with the chains. Although as any website, people come here with problems not praises. That's just how it goes.

no ground clearance? HUH? my stock mounty had more clearance than a friends Tacoma 4x4 and another friends Jeep GC :dunno: if you want more give it more. You probably have the smaller tires that were available.

You've got to know what you want it's just unfortunate you only found out after your purchase. I would suggest you do more research this time before you purchase

it's not controversy that set off the spark, it was the tone you set entering the forum. It's like going to a friends house and making fun of his family.

Please don't feel the need to shut up, however next time I would suggest a little more tact, or some explanation into the situation. We all want to help in anyway we can, and when someone comes to a place like this a just throws out random insults it can be hard to handle.

If the problem was fixed under warranty why the fuss? I don't get it, Ford admits it made a mistake, it can happen, we all do it. It just so happens that our mistakes don't effect hundreds of thousands of people.

I hope you decide to keep your truck, it really is a good vehicle. And I would bet if you get a taller set of BFG AT's on that thing it will outperform your Friends truck in a heartbeat. Just a thought...

Okay that was funny.
No harm no foul bro.

Look this is an Explorer enthusiast web site. 99.5% of us here are quite fond of our explorers, and dont take too kindly to bashing. We are a protective bunch. So take much of our remarks with that in mind.

Bottom line is the Explorer DOES NOT meed every ones needs or expectations.
No vehicle does. Hence the vast market as it is.

Your input is noted and appriciated.

Advice taken and thanks for all of the comments!!
You certainly are passionate about the explorers!! That has to be admired in a world of apathy!
I didn't mean to insult anyone!
Yes I had it checked first but on the sand dunes north of perth the chains just started rattling without any warning! Plus the 4x4 low system locked in but thats no problems just disconnect the battery.
Like I said repaired on warrenty but I have lost some faith

I personally find that the only way I have trust (I only use the word faith with one topic :D) in any vehicle is to personally knwo the innermost workings of it and personally maintain each part so that I know the state of it along with it's weaknesses. Then I can have a certain level of trust in the vehicle, even then stuff happens parts break.

Oh and I can only speak for myself, but I am not offended at all, you would have to talk about my wife or kids for that :D.

You should stick around a while and do some reading about what you can actually do with your explorer. I bet you will be surprised in how "capable" the truck can really be
