I'm getting my 31's next week, and I dont have the money right now to get a 31" spare... also I dont really want a 10.5" wide tire in the stock spare tire space hanging down to the ground.

So, will retaining a 29" tire as my spare be a big problem on my front end for a short trip in case of emergency? Or would I be better off just not even bothering with a spare (and just calling a tow truck) until I can get another 31" tire?

It should be fine. However I recommend finding a used 31 or something. You can run a 29" tire in the front with the hubs unlocked but not in the rear if you have a limited sliip or locker in the rear. If you don't than you can put it anywhere.

actually a 31x10.50 fits pretty decent in the spare tire location. i used to have a small 32x11.50 crammed in there.

how far does it hang down though? I would be using a stock wheel also...

I am eventually getting another 31", so I guess if it hangs too low I could make up a spare carrier for the cargo area

it should really only hang down like an extra inch or so. i dunno i never measured or anything. but back when i was on 31's i never got hung up on my spare. not that i knew of :p

When you're getting the new tires, see if they will sell/give you a used 31 they have laying around. I've done that before.

Like BLee said, if you don't have a LSD or locker, you can run different size tires all day long.

what about a awd with a stock lsd?

awd means u better have all the same tires with the same wear on them. u can't run 2 different size tires on a limited slip axle either.

My camaro (97) had a space saver spare and it was tiny. The manual said if you used it on the rear you should drive the minimum miles you can get away with and dont go over 35 mph. It was a limited slip type rear. I assume the reason this is bad is you would be continually slipping the clutch and wear it out. What if you just drove really slow? I still have the 29 inch spare but I have an open dif upfront so I can just move a front tire to the back.
