Only full size spares can be used on our trucks. The size you need is the same size as the tires already on the truck, which should be 225/75/15, I think. You can check on the door label for the exact size. And yes, it will fit under the truck.

Most Gen 1 Explorers came with 235-75R15's, which is a very common size and readily available...

i was going to use a wheel off a xplorer not the spare wheel but the rim . it would be nice to have a matching spare thanks for the info

Mine didn't come with a spare either, but that's cause the winch that holds it under the truck was rusted out and broken off, so I went to the scrap yard and got a 15" rim and an old tire and just put it in the back. May get one of those swing doors that holds a spare on the back some day when I want my trunk space back.
Size on my 92 is also 225/75/15

u need a rim? i got a few of em! great condition, what one u needing?

That cable can be replaced, I saw a thread here describing how easy it is and from what I saw under my truck it's pretty simple. Only problem is finding one from another truck that isn't already rusted to all hell!

how far r u from chicago. u have any pics of the rims.

thats the rim, and i live in indiana, im about 6 hours from chicago

the spare tire winch is easy to replace. two 13mm (IIRC) bolts, takes 5min.
a 255/70/16 will fit under there, although it's a tight squeeze.

thanks for the help and info. i went to the junk yard today and got a spare off a 96 explorer the tire looks brand new the tire still has the red green and yellow lines on it. sitting next to that was a another explorer on its side and easy acces to the spare tire winch i think i was at the yard for 20 min and it all costed me $35.00

good deal man! u know any one with a ranger/explorer that neds a new rim???
