I want to change the plugs on my 1998 V6 Sohc X but I am confused as to which plug to put in.

Although I have done some minor mods I think I am going to keep it to either a Motorcraft double platinum or a Denso Iridium, though the Denso costs $12.99/plug.

I am confused as my owners manual calls for Motorcraft part # AGRF-22P. Is that a platinum plug or regular electrode? I can not seem to find it on a search.

Recomendations on a great plug to use would be tremendously helpful. :D

The plug recomended by the factory IS the best plug for the engine. Try doing a search on this subject and you'll find several threads asking the same question and in every case there is only one plug I'd ever recomend, the factory replacement!

Thanks, I have done several searches for motorcraft spark plugs and nothing turns up?

Somebody out there must know.

I run Autolite Double Plats and they work great

By all means use Motorcraft plugs. I use the double platinum.

motorcraft plug

i belive the part # is agsf-22-pp which is a platinum plug

I run the Denso Iridiums.... why, exactly, are they not as good as the Motorcrafts? (apparently I missed that discussion)

-Joe

I hear Denso Iridiums are the catsass when it comes to plug power, even used them in my MR2 Turbo@ 16psi with great results.

Thought the problem is if my ride is semi stock why spend the $12.99 per Denso if the new Motorcraft Finewire Double Platinum is going to give the same performance?

If the Denso will add power to my kicked up Air and Fuel it could be considered.

At $4.59 per plug the Motorcrafts seem like a solid bet. And most all with the Catback, intake, Chip are using them.

I, too, have heard nothing bu good about them. That's why I chose them when I replaced mine. I only paid $8 each for them, so the premium (an additional $18 for 6) was OK in my book....

-Joe

Wow where did you get them for $8?

The local Murrays discount auto.... I *thought* they were $8.... now I'm wondering. They were definately Iridiums though...

-Joe

Oh? Maybe it was NGK Iridiums they sell for around $8. I have never seen Denso for less than $10.50 a plug.

The newest Motorcraft Platinum plug is about $3.50 each.

Ding ding ding!!! That explains it.... they were the NGKs, not the Densos.... My mistake.

is that for double platinum?

Or double platinum Fine wire? Cheapest I have found them is $4.59 per plug.

If you are looking for longevity then the platinum plug is the one to go with. But for performance they plain suck, because of the extreme amount of spark energy required to fire the plug. You will never see them in any aftermarket situation. The standard copper plugs are the ones to run in a performance application, the main drawback...maintenance sooner.. And last but not least the fine wire electrode iridiums are in the middle for the plugs they are able to live under many miles (like the platinums) with out maintenance, but the cost is not worth it. They will not make one ounce of hp more than the standard coppers. I run Champions (304) one heat range colder and in all the mustangs 4.6L(naturally aspirated) my customers run Champion 401 at my request, because I have never had a failure with these plugs! Like I previously said I have had my Champion 304's in for 30K miles and rechecked the gap the other day and it was still dead on it. No abnormal wear and the plug looked like it had only been in a couple of miles. Keep in mind my truck is forced induction and a mildly modded vehicle would probably have better results (for longevity)

Lazz if you are interested your truck will call for Champion 401 (just like the 4.6L), if your interested in single plats then the number will be 3401, and double plats are 7401. And for all who fall into the iridium propoganda then Champion sells them for the 4.0L as well the Champion 9204 will be the stock heat range just for you. Keep in mind these #'s will work ohv or sohc. Champion iridiums will set you back around $8.00 & change/each.

Thanks James sounds good to me.

BTW what about those Beru Silverstone plugs made by Nology. They say Silver is the most conductive metal, but you don't hear all that much about those plugs- just the hot wires.

I ran a set in my 91 MR2 Turbo and later replaced them with Iridium plugs, the iridiums where noticeably better. Though as James says copper is the best and most cost effective. To bad changing plugs in an X is such a *****... :fire:
