I want to change my spark plugs on my Explorer. Took them out and they were black. What kind of spark plugs should I get?

If you want to 'set it and forget it' then Motorcraft double platinums. Autolite can be substituted. If you want budget, you can get the copper ones from either manufacturer.

Black? Get cheap ones, because you will be changing them again. Your engine is running very rich, and I suggest you find the problem.

I like Autolite or Motorcraft. Never been disappointed in either.

That or it's burning oil.

Was it black and crusty or just a light coating in black with some brown? Can you post pictures?

Or maybe he's referring to the color of the plug body?
